crisscat777 gave me the idea for this poll. I suspect this has been done before, but I haven't seen it recently.

The question is, from your own experiences, what is easier to care for...fish, or corals?

I would say corals....as fish seem more demanding or tempermentale as well.

Plus you can't really "FRAG" your fish!

I vote fish. I have kept sw fish for 11 years with very few deaths or problems. I have had my reef set up for only 1 yr and it has been a lot of work.

IME, Fish are much easier, at least in terms of equipment and tolerable ranges of water parameters. OTOH, corals are easier to maintain, given that your parameters are stable.

Well guys i know i am way to new at this to know better. But getting in to the hobbie i was lead to belive that keeping corals would be close to inposible for a newbie. but my coral are fin the truth is i can see them grow. but my fish that is a hole other store one got sick and started a chain reaction. 3 died and 1 slill sick. they are so hard to pull out of the tank to treat them, that is why i went for fish.

Work wise its corals for sure. You have lots less import of nutrients and less chance for things to build up in the tank. Corals don't get diseases like fish. Corals are easier to control when it come to territory.

The biggest thing that makes corals easier is the importation of nutrients and their lower metabolisms. Fish can really foul up a tank.

Given if your just wanting a "tank", fish are very simple (generally) compaired to corals and are much more tollerant to errors in husbandry (generally).

Now another beast would be mixed tank where you have fish and corals involved. It becomes very difficult maintain perameters that will support both. The balencing act can easily become upset with repects to nutrient importation.

Simply because I've had more corals die than fish, I went fish. Fish don't much care if there's nitrates or phosphate in the water. Few fish will die of hair algae or weak lights.

Damsels and Sarcophyton are easy, pipefish and Acropora's are not.

My opinion Fish are easier to care for. but i don't have coral right now to say.
i think this may lead to the point that is being made here. those of us that think corals are easier are trying to keep corals, and the fish are secondary. those that find fish easier are trying to keep the fish and corals are something to look at while the fish is swimming by.

i think it all boils down to what are you trying to keep in your system. :D

it depends how you have your tank set up and what type of each yo uare looking to keep.

Keeping corals in a set up designed for fish would be hard, and tanks set up for hard core corals may be hard to keep fish happy.....read around, many people choose to almost starve their fish to keep nutrient levels down..

I had FOWLR w/ aggresive fish ( EASY )
I had FOWLR w/ Non-aggresive fish ( NOT EASY DUE TO FISH DISEASE/PARASITES )
I had corals w/ reef friendly fish ( FISH NEARLY WIPED OUT EXCEPT FOR THE GOBY & SKUNK PAIR )

- Now I only run things with CORALS and some remaining fish. This setup is the best for me and it's been doing great.

- So, I go for CORALS.
