Simple question

Does an eel require as much room as a fish? Especially if it is a species that like hiding in confined spaces? Like, for example, could a 2 foot eel live in a smaller tank than a 2 foot fish?

Unfortunately this isn't so. They still require ample space to really be comfortable. Most times 100+ gallon tanks are suggested for true eels. A bare minimum of 55+ for smaller species like the golden eel. The Wolf eel, which really isn't a true eel can get by with a tank around 75+g.

In addition to just needing roaming space when they feel like it, the extra water volume will help to dilute the excessive waste they produce. Smaller tanks can see a rapid rise in nitrates and phosphates due to the amount of live food they like to consume.

I'm sure one could get away with forcing an eel into a smaller setup, but I doubt neither the eel nor owner will be truly happy.

it is true the way he worded his question. A 2 foot saltwater fish would require a much larger tank then a 2 foot eel.

It depends. There are a few species that are Moray eels, such as the Jeweled moray, zebra moray, I believe the snowflake is considered a moray as well.

Some of them will do well in a smaller tank, even as small as 50 gallons, but others need much larger like 200 gallons. Which eel do you want to get?

A two foot eel can be kept in a smaller thank than you would keep a two foot fish in. Their space requirements are quite different. The eel will spend most of it's time hiding in the rock work. and when it does swim the nature of its body allows it to be more flexible and turn around in a smaller space than could a larger fish.
