Some anemone questions

I have 2 clowns that were completely ignoring my new BTA for the first 2 weeks. Tuesday night the smaller of the 2 clowns finally decided to "get in" the nem. He spent the night in the nem and left it when the lights came on. Then the larger of the clowns "got in" too. Using it during the day and leaving it at night. So, they shared it. Now the larger of the clowns has taken over the BTA and wont let the other clown near it, day or night.

Should I buy another anemone? If so what kind? Another BTA?

I saw this one at a LFS today for 30.00, they say its a bubble tip. Is it? I wasn't sure. I am talking about the one attached to the side of the tank to the right.

Some of the other nems in this tank did not look so good. Some had gaping mouths, others the foot was all puffed up. Many were bleached. The tank is filthy and the lights above the tank were not on. This was at lunch time today. The one in the photo looked the best and the mouth was closed up tight.

As some of you know, I dont mind taking a chance to "save" an animal. But I do not want to put my tank inhabitants at risk. My Q/T is ready to go. What do you think?

Most Nems recognize another nem within 5 feet of eachother and begin warfare on eachother in which they both end up dying. If it is a split or clone of itself then having 2 will be fine. It is not suggested keeping 2 in less than a 150 Gallon.

What you are seeing with you clowns is great! The one who ends up keeping the nem will be the female. You'lle have to wait and see who gets it!

Yes both false percs. The larger one is orange & white the other is black & white

Well I am only 75 so maybe another nem is a bad idea. Looks like the larger of the 2 has gotten the nem.

If your goal is to pair up the clowns I would not get another anemone at this point. As it is the smaller one should repeatedly try moving into the anemone with the larger one. Eventually they should build a pair bond. If you get another anemone, especially if it's positioned at the other end of the tank, both clowns will be able to set up their own territories. Eventually they will mature, become female, expand their territory as they grow, and conflicts can break out where their territories overlap.

If you do get another anemone, make sure it's the same species, and they are positioned very close together. This will force them the share the same territory, and hopefully become a pair.

There has always been concerns about chemical warfare between anemones. While I believe it's a valid concern, it has yet to be proven. Many people, including myself, have mixed species without any noticeable problems. I've even seen different species physically touching, like magnifica and gigantea, without harm. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to combine anemones of the same species.

That is what I would want. I sometimes forget that these things do not happen overnight. I am going to leave things as they are for a while. Lets see what happens in the coming weeks.

Is anyone able to ID this one in question?

Also, what about buying a specimen from a dirty tank? Is that a bad idea? I figure if you mail order something, you dont get to see where its being kept. Is it a crap shoot?

If the specimen itself looks good I would mostly not be overly concerned about the looks of the tank. Anemones have slow metabolisms and go downhill pretty slowly. If the nem has good color, is sticky, eats, has its mouth closed and not puffy and those kind of things I would think it is OK from a dirty tank. ZI would not of course want to introduce any of that water into my tank .
