Hey Guys -

I've got a 2.5" foxface on hold at my lfs that I'll pick up tomorrow. He'll have plenty to eat in the form of feathery green caulerpa, sawblade caulerpa, grape caulerpa, and some red and green hair algae. Once he clears that out though he's gonna need some more food.

This seems like a pretty basic question to me, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Do you think it's cheaper to buy nori sheets or dried seaweed for algae eating fish? Any drawbacks to using one over the other?

Feel free to give him a variety of foods. Mine eats blender mush (oysters, clams, scallops, mussels, shrimp and other white fish). Also there's 2 fronds of Romaine lettuce and a stalk of broccoli daily. Also have algae clips for Nori (Asian department not pet store). The tangs and all foxes eat that grazing throughout the day. They seem to love it all.

I did get 2 smaller foxes who were rail thin when I got them. Now 2 weeks later, they are little chubbies swimming around. I don't think I have a skinny fish in the tank...which probably explains the diatoms/phosphates...one thing I will say, the nori breaks down if not eaten right away where the romaine and broccoli don't.

Could you explain this further for me? I have a raging diatom problem now, going on a second month, and it's driving me crazy! Also have some fat and happy fish!

Thanks :wavey:

Ok, yes, thanks. I've tested, they are low, and they were reading zero yesterday but my nitrates were a teensy bit high as was the ammonia. I've got a combination of things going on as July and August somehow got dedicated to doing things for other people and I let things slide around here. Also, the heat was on and it was difficult to keep the tank below 82 when I usually shoot for under 79. I've been working on it fairly non-stop for the last several days making sure I'm ridding it of the algae as I kill/scrape it off and doing nice water changes. My tangs are picky, they don't like the red nori sheets, only the green. So I don't even offer it anymore, as it just feeds the filters and the causes yukky problems like you mention. Thanks for the explanation!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll most likely skip the dry stuff and go with the romaine :)

Just put the fox face in the tank. I think that was the most tense transition I've ever done. I just kept thinking, " Don't get stung!!! Don't get stung!!!". The wife says I have to have my own "fish romaine" in a separate bag because ewwwww fish germs :)
