There should be a little black screw where you adjust the collection cup. Mine finished its break in period in less that 48hrs. It's in saltwater right?

 

Yea, the cup is as low as it goes and yes, it's in salt water

 

I'm sure it's just the break in period. Within a week or two it should be working. It's a great skimmer.

 

Should I be afraid that once this starts working it'll overflow and my tank will drain itself?

 

Just check on it whenever you stop by to look at your tank.

It should not unless you add any meds/chemicals.

 

Mine took about ten days to two weeks to break in. Had lots of microbubbles at first. I was totally bummed, thought I had wasted my money and it was junk. And then.... VOILA!
Consistent skimmate, micro bubbles stopped, and my tank looks great. Give it time!

 

Did you wash it 1st?what is your salinity?that all changes how it works and how long it takes to brake in.

 

Yes and my salinity is 1.26ish
I noticed a slight climb in the height it reaches up the collection cup.

I put mine in a rubbermaid container of white vinegar and water and let it run overnight. Didn't take too long after that and it was skimming away. When I first put it on without the vinegar bath / bubbles did not go up very far like you mentioned. But now, it works great.
