From Skimmerless to Vinegar dosing

While the skimmerless was great and I received no algae from it, the SPS all lacked color. Going skimmerless will make LPS explode with growth and the softies loved it as well. It was one of those things I was just trying to see if I could do it or not and what would happen. If I had no SPS in the tank I would still be skimmerless. I made it 6 months and could have went longer.

So about 3 weeks ago I started to dose vinegar to get the nitrates down (about 10) and lower the P04. I started the minimum dose and boy did the skimmer start pulling some junk out. I was worried about stressing the corals going from one extreme to another so I started very slowly. I'm up to 20ml a day only dosing vinegar and could not be happier. Everything has great color and no algae to speak of. The tank is very clear. I plan to settle in carbon dosing and try to get a maintenance plan together in the future. I have added a 1/2" of sand to the tank going from bare bottom a few weeks ago and added a 7 gallon bucket RDSB to my sump full of aragonite oolitic sand to also help with denitrification and buffering capabilities.

Here's to carbon dosing!

Very nice....vinegar & carbon huh? The proof is in the pic!!!
True but this tank has looked this good since day one

Can we have more pics? Please

I'd like to see a single thread with the evolution of your tank over the years.

Soooo, when are you going to host a meeting so we can see this awesome tank in person? :D

Would be glad to host a meeting in the future when my schedule lets me. Heck, I just went to the fish store a couple weeks ago and thats the first time I've been in close to a year! If I'm not working I'm with my wife and 2 boys doing something. The tank gets little attention compared to what it used to get. Thats why I try to keep it as simple as possible.

I just had a pocci spawn about a month ago and now have pink pocci growing everywhere. Trying to kill as many pieces as possible. This stuff is as bad as xenia!

Here is the one Randy has written on Vodka. I'm using Vinegar which is 8x more "diluted" than Vodka. All you have to do is multiply the Vodka amount by 8 to get the Vinegar dosage. I chose Vinegar due to people reporting less canyo and other related situations. To this date there has been no algae growth or I have yet to experience a bacterial bloom. The key is to go slowly and let the system establish its bacteria count and the hard part is when to halt the dosage and get a maintenance dose going. You can remove too many nutrients doing this method and starve your corals. You just have to go slowly.

Good eye Nate!

Its a children's game where they think the Elf spy's on them and reports their behavior back to Santa. It gets moved on a daily basis and our 3 year old goes out on a manhunt in the morning to locate him. Forgot he was even in the pic till I just tried to resize the photo!
