Okay, so i put in 12 hermits yesterday afternoon, wake up this morning, the anemones have already eaten 4 of them. Is there a crab thats not so stupid it will wonder into the anemones? Just curious. These guys were blue leg and red leg. I am assuming they were eaten, theres just empty shells laying right outside the anemones reach. Should I just get snails this time? Im just curious as to what I should do for a cleanup crew.

its a rock flower anemone. E. Crucifier. I have 4 in my tank, they love it and are doing well. Been in there three months ish. 29 gallon tank. Which I already know its overkill, but I just wish I could keep a cleanup crew. They just get eaten. I was feeding every other day. But I havent fed them in probably two weeks or so. Let me re phrase that...I personally have not fed them in two weeks, they have eaten hermits every 3-4 days. lol.

I can assure you that it is true. In the wild, a majority of an anemones diet includes crabs, shrimp and snails that stumble onto it.

Fish would be an infrequent prey item in the wild as fish are smart enough to stay away from anemones. In aquariums where there is less room to manuever and fish are prone to being spooked, the chances of an anemone catching a fish are much better but it still doesn't happen often.

Well, it seems as though the snails are smart enough to know better. But the hermits.....they just walk right in to the nem. Just watched one walk into it, get eaten, and the shell was spit out about 10 minutes later. I guess Im just going to have a crabless clean up crew. lol

I wish I had the money for a video camera. I would record it. It happens at night mostly. As soon as the halides are off, and the moonlights are on. The nems double in size and the hermits look at it like a bug lamp. They just cant resist.

Jason, what would you put in there as a cleanup crew? My tonga fighting conch is doing great....emerald crab is smart enough.......few nassarious.....and a few other snails. What else? Or is that good? I do have a little bit of a bigger hermit that knows not to go near them.

I'm not a huge hermit crab fan so I try and get every different snail that I can find. I do have just a few of the larger hermits. My favorite cleaner is the tiger tail cucumber, they are like sandbed vacuums.

I don't go overboard on the cleanup crew and just add a few occasionally as needed.
