So how are we doing on the bacterial end of the system, the zeolites, etc?

What more do we need to examine?

Or is it time to move on to the suppliment end and the zooxanthellae `regulation' that this system is trying to do? IMO, these theories on what is going on with the zoox/coloration are very interesting and seem like they can teach us something as well [like this bacterial discussion]

I want to know how you regulate zoox levels. Since reduced nutrient levels isn't soley responsible (remember, there are other additives to get the pretty colors); then what is happening inside the corals? What ways are there to inhibit zoox populations? Or are the chemicals increasing the amount of pigment and not having any effect on the zoox?

Brownies. :)
To follow Barry [and since you brought up sugars] ... I'm very intrigued as well.

Is it lowering zoox levels?
Is this achieved solely thru low nutrient levels, or is something else added affecting things?

Having lowered Zoox levels - would this then give the corals less available sugars to use for calcification? Or does the coral make this up in bacteria consumption?

Would one be able to run reduced light then in this system with good results?

I'd think if you're moving things away from zoox [and more towards feeding] that less light might be needed - and if I can get 400w color out of 175w bulbs with this system maybe there is a cost savings.

Questions questions!

Yup, thinking is hard work ... so most think tank threads go and have snacks in the discussion.

Some of the best threads have good recipes too ... Barry's peanut sauce, Spanky's Cornbread, those Chambord Brownies. Worth going thru the old threads for!

It's no fair to tell you where they're all at, but I seem to recall a few are easy to find and the rest in some pretty good threads.
Once you've read them I guess you'll have come into acceptance of the food discussion as impossible to get rid of :D

That would be those chambord brownies I think ...

But remember - every time you post one of those, you have to get the discussion back on track with some good questions, answers, or things back to normal.

That cow can be a bit distracting, you know?

OK , From what I got so far is ,

this Zeovit just teaches us good husbandry and a bacteria factory that has to be fed special food that the tank doesn't already supply .

Also why would we want a bacteria that we have to feed , That remindes of a remote DSB .:freak:

Besides specifics was there something I missed in the reading?

Sorry for the simplisitic sumary but thats all I know.

I'm way behind guys but I did see this on the first posts

I have no idea how you did this, Barry.?.? Acrobat Reader

There is Acrobat Reader (free) and Acrobat ( full version $400), which I have. When buiding PDF files the user can key the PDF so you can't copy/paste, even in Acrobat but such is not the case with this file. It is often another issue often with Reader in not bing able to copy/paste. Look in the upper left and see if there is a "Select Tool" or "Select Text Tool", you must click on that first to copy/paste.

Jer

Glad that Ivan missed you. Not so good for Ric, right in line with the eye, going through his home town with a few thousand $ worth of SPS's

Any day I will have;

Bacterial Biogeochemistry: the Ecophysiology of Mineral Cycling

OK, now back to your bacters' :D

PS

I'm tired of Zeovit threads, my fingers are worn out :(

Don't feel bad Joefish, I'm with you.
I guess this is why I don't post much in the think tank, I realize pretty quickly I'm overmatched. I have to do a lot of research to try and understand some of the posts that have been put up, and by the time I come back to them, the discussion has moved well ahead of me.

Oh well, at least I'm learning a lot... :)

Amino acids have been covered. Bacteria food has been covered. Zeovit media has been covered. This leaves:

"Potassium iodide / fluoride concentrate: The addition of this supplement leads to improved blue colors in SPS. In contrast to PVP iodide or Lugols Iodide solution, there is no tissue darkening as long as the amount is appropriate."

"Iron Concentrate: The addition of iron primarily affects the green color formation. However, this element has to be treated with caution. Iron is known to increase coral growth, but also the growth of algae."

"Macroelement solution (ZEOspur Macroelements concentrate) This product supports growth as well as color formation. This product does not contain the “standard” elements but rather elements missing from synthetic salt mixes. However, these elements are available at very low concentrations in natural seawater."

"Pocci-Stylo-Glow This product “regulates” the density of zooxanthellae in pocillopora, stylophora and seriatopora."

"Trace element solution (ZEOspur2) It is possible with this product to influence the amount of zooxanthellae in the coral tissue."

Phish, Joe, others ... I'll refer us back to a couple complex threads that relate or discuss the kind of system we're trying to run. Not sure if it will help [and less food breaks] ... but it's more knowledge to try not to sink through.

We'll get you up swimming some time, and I normally wish I had neoprene on so I could float a lot better :) - folks are nice here and anyone trying to learn is often confused by technicality until a month later in the shower what you've been reading ties together. I find re-reading some good threads from a few months back has a lot of things making sense, even if someone's response confused me at the time :)

Ok, I ended up making a re-reading list for my vacation there ... but feel free to take a peek and better yet, remind me of other good threads that relate to this whole discussion. I always miss a ton.

Takes a while, but once things start to connect - it's pretty cool.

Anyway, lots of talk about `clean' systems, zooxanthellae, low nutrient tanks ... similar to what we're going for here:

As far as the "macroelement" solution - wouldn't "macro" imply "Major"? This is misleading labelling, since (if it contains what they say) it actually contains trace elements not included in salt mixes, which qualifies in any book as "Micro" elements.

I found this article on salt mixes interesting:

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/sept2004/feature.htm

It would be interesting to find out exactly what is in the additive.
