What is the absolute worst, most misleading thing you have heard a LFS employee tell someone (or you)? I know there are plenty of good LFS out there and all of them take a lot of heat because of the crappy ones. It's sad, but they are pretty much an exception to the rule.

I was motivated to create this thread when the owner of one of my LFS's told me that I could put a lunare wrasse, one of the faster swimming breeds, in a 20 gallon!! This guy also wanted me to put a triggerfish in my first tank when it was still cycling and I was still a helpless newbie. Some people will do anything to turn a profit...

I was just a noob . Decades ago . LOL I asked the store owner . " I would like to buy some of that live rock ". His response to me was ." It takes running a saltwater tank a year or two before you can put that in " . So I kept buying and killing fish using crushed coral and a undergravel filter .
Started buying and reading FAMA mags .
I researched more after frustration of losses and rabbit ear pockets . I redid my tank with Florida live rock BB . No undergravel filter .Bought a protein skimmer . Added multiple tubes of NO lights (remember triton's ) and then I the added fish and never looked back .

hehe, i get knowledge from TRT thanks to all of you! I ask my local LFS the same questions and compare answers between TRT and them. So far... I haven't been let down from my LFS. My local LFS are very honest and its just a pick between the big 3 here in Wichita KS. some stock better fish, some have more decent LR, and some have the best mix of corals for a decent price.
I think its fun to create an 'ocean' environment in the middle of the U.S. and i'm blessed that people here share the same interests as me.:)

went into a LFS and asked, "i have a freshwater tank but all my fish died. is saltwater easy? i also heard it was expensive?"

LFS, "noooooooo. saltwater is easy and not that expensive. you just need sw-mix, a skimmer, a heater and good filtration."

i said, "ok. set me up with some sw-mix"

that was about $5,000 and 4 years ago.

yeah, its easy and in-expensive, my BUTT! I wish someone would have punched me in the face after asking the first question.

i'm a hairstylist and when i ask people if they have pets they often ask me if i have pets in return. I promptly tell them i have 2 cats, 1 girlfriend and a saltwater reef tank. They always say...i've heard saltwater tanks are really hard

I dont think of it as hard. I say its a hobby and i enjoy checking my water parameters and weekly water changes. I honestly don't think that its any harder than freshwater (give or take more lenience for water conditions) but I do comment on the fact that it's much more expensive than any freshwater setup i have ever had.:agree:

Conversation between my Daughter (12 at the time) and the owner of an LFS:

Daughter: Can I have two clownfish in my FW 5G nano tank?
Owner: Absolutely.
Daughter: Can I add a "Dory" to the tank as well?
Owner: Absolutely.
Daughter: Will I have to do anything special when I get them home?
Owner: No, just dump them in.
Daughter: Even though I have FW in there now and the fish I want are SW?
Owner: No, they will adapt.
Daughter: Anything special I need to do for a 7 hour trip home?
Owner: No, just don't open the bag, they will be fine.
Daugher: Will they be ok in the bag until tomorrow when we leave? We aren't leaving today.
Owner: No, thats even better.

Me walking up to the counter and wondering why my daugher had a "Dory" and two clownfish ready to go to Florida the next day isn't fit to print in a porn magazine for Navy sailors. I had to deal with her and get her calmed down (He got her excited about having a nemo and a dory). I finally did get her a Dory and two clowns, now they are in a friends tank. Whenever I go in the store that we were in (Its here in hillbillyville), he runs and hides from me. Maybe hillbillies aren't that stupid after all.

I go to the LFS to see something and causually enough one of the guys I always talk to and he asks "how are the fish you bought the other day?"

I said "they have Ich" (I have only bought fish there BTW)

LFS- "That's normal"

I reply- "No it's not. I am gonna get rid of it, I have my fish in Hyposalinity now trying to cure it"

enter 2nd LFS employee......

LFS - "it is IMPOSSIBLE to cure ich. It's always there dormant, waiting" he looks at the other guy..."right...."

2nd LFS guy "yep, can't ever get rid of it"

I say - "that's not what I read on the internet (meaning TRT)"

LFS - "You can't believe what you read on the internet, we took classes on parasites, they are always there"...... looks at the other guy......."right?"

2nd LFS guy "yep, we went to school"

I say - "Well, I respectfully disagree with both of you, good bye"

I won't name the chain store as I know that most employees there are either retired trying to make ends meet or teenages just wanting a check.

Employee: "Yes, the test strips are accurate"
Customer: "Are they as accurate as my test kits at home?"
Employee: "Yes. People saying the test strips aren't accurate is a marketing ploy to sell the more expensive kits".
Customer: "Are you absolutely sure? I want to make sure because my kits at home give me different results than you give me".
Employee: "I work at pet***** I must know what I am talking about".

I walked up and asked if he do a simple experiment for me. He said sure. I asked him to test the ladies water with the test strips, write the results down. After that, I simply took my sweaty finger and ran it across the strip and asked him to test with it. He must have known what he was doing because he used the strip I put sweat all over. 30 minutes later, after I explained to the lady why the test strips weren't as accurate and that she was absolutely right, there were 3 teenagers still trying to figure out why they got different results if you touched the strip with your finger.

Responsibility falls on the part of the customer to know what they are purchasing. The LFS does not sell information. The online domain of this hobby is really beating a dead horse with regard to this topic. It can take years to learn the basics in this hobby, and it is quite naive to expect someone to spoon feed the information to you because you might make a purchase. Without the LFS I imagine 99% of us would not even be in this hobby. When you go to buy a car do you look around a little first or do you take the first car salesmans word that you are getting the best car for your money with him?

Make informed decisions!

Or does he have enough gumption to want people to be responsible for there own actions instead of blaming someone else when they don't do there own homework?

The LFS is a great place to get advice. But, in the end, it is still on the shoulders of the customer to decide whether that advice is good or bad.

Very well said.

I don't really see the point to this thread.

Woo sorry, I guess I should have made the thread more politically correct to please everyone. "The Funniest Aquarium Advice You've Heard" or something like that. I just wanted to get a laugh reading about the bullsh-- some of the LFS people spout off. But everyone is capable of giving bad advice, so maybe I shouldn't have limited it to LFS.

Cerobbins has a good point, but we also can't take away all responsibility from the LFS and place it on the customer. I don't know much about car dealerships, but I assume it would be a problem if they blatantly lied about their merchandise. "Yes, it has a hemi" when it really doesn't would be illegal. With fish it isn't that simple so I think it's easier for a LFS to cut corners.

I agree partly, the other part thinks that someone who sells livestock for a living should know a fair deal about it. I don't think I'd run a business expecting the customers to never need my support on livestock I keep in volume.
