Whiskey's 300 Gallon Glass Cages Dream Reef build

I know I've made mention a time or two recently that I was interested in setting up a dream reef, the kind of reef that I've wanted ever since the early 2000's but I've never been able to do for one reason or another. Something in the neighborhood of 300 gallons that I can have for 20 years and really grow SPS out to full showstopping colony size while still having room here and there for the newest frag (if I keep things trimmed well enough that is).

Well! I wasn't in any real rush because my 135 growing along well, but I was pricing various vendors, checking facebook, and going through large build threads around the size I'm looking at searching for ideas, and I came across a fantastic build by Hydrored which was right up my alley. I got to the end of the thread, and he said that he's moving, and this tank size doesn't work well in the new house, so he's building something better for the house and it's for sale. Turns out he's only 3 hours away by car, and I couldn't be happier!!! I'm picking it up in a few weeks, but in the meantime here are the details:

Glass Cages 300 Gallon, 7 foot long, 33 inches wide, and 25 inches tall. It is all starfire glass (even the eurobrace) and it is trimness on the top. The seams are armored, where they put plastic over the silicone so they can't get damaged. It has a shadow box Ghost overflow which doesn't take up excessive in tank space, and it's drilled for 3 1.5" drains, and 2 3/4" returns. The tank really is a gem, it's been kept in immaculate condition, and it is absolutely Dream Reef material.

The Stand is Extruded Aluminum, with all high end stainless hardware, and the aluminum is strong enough that it only needs one center support over the 7 foot span. The stand is also easy to break down and reassemble, like an erector set. Right now the underside is open, but it comes with little button clips to attach wooden panels. At first I was going to make drawers and doors, which I might still do, but the clips are cool enough that I could make shaker style doors and just pop them on and off. I'm undecided for now. I haven't used a stand like this before, but I'm really intrigued, it has allot of benefit, strong, doesn't corrode, doesn't warp, light,... I'll let you know more once I take it apart and put it back together.

And!! I'm lucky enough to have the sump coming along with it!! Honestly I wouldn't have gone this nice if I wasn't getting it used. This picture is from the Manufacturer's website, and mine has a couple different holes, but it's more or less the same. This Sump is 5 foot, by 2 foot, by 16 inches. That should be plenty! For the first time in a very long time I'm actually considering not doing a refugium. My 25 doesn't have one and I've had less trouble keeping Po4 and NO3 in balance in that tank. I have room in this sump if I need it, but I think I'm going to start without and see.

Finally, there is the coral! There are countless amazing pieces in this collection, but that's the thing I'm most nervous about moving. It's only 3 hours, and I've taken individual corals much, much further, but never this much coral at one time. I have a good plan in place, and I've already setup a holding 100G stock tank to get them right in water when they arrive, but we will have more on that later.

For now I want to close off the first post with pictures of my current reef that will be merged into the new tank, this is the 135 cube that I've been running for the last 2 ish years.

Thanks for following along! And I'll have updates on the coral move plan soon!

It limited me to 20 images! Here's the rest of that post:

These have had a few extra months to settle in, they came in the order for the Raindrops on Roses contest from Battle Corals:

Great looking corals , pictures outstanding

Took my wife to the local fish store I deal with and have my seahorses at, I just went for food and then my wife started looking at clowns, she picked up two ORA Black storms, not the cheapest when it comes to clowns and then started saying you should add some frags. not sure what she called the frags, I didn't got just the food.
I need to start taken her more often.

The output size remained the same just used adapter to go up to larger pipe size.

Thank you!! You really do need to take her more often! Sounds like she has good taste! Do you have pictures of the Frags? I had two of those black storm clowns that came with the 135, I really like them. I love regular clowns as well of course, they are a fish that needs to be in every tank, but the different takes on them are pretty cool.

Right right. I was meaning more like a design and manufacturing thing. Normally with other brands as the pumps get larger their output size gets bigger, but it seems like Mag/Danner used 3/4 from the Mag 7 to the Mag 18.

I didn’t get any of the frags. But now I know I can, lol

now she has fish and when I need something I can tell her I need it for her fish and tank. I glad she went with the storms. If I decide to breed the sell for a higher dollar amount then regular clowns . It hard to justify all the time and money when at a wholesale price you may only get 10 dollars per clown. But these wholesale probably more in the 50 dollar range.

I have a beautiful Picasso I have tried to introduce two males . She killed both. I have two pair of pajamas clowns that breed and have babies all the time and haven’t tried raising for that reason . Not super popular and they are 20 dollar fish. i love them but if I’m going to raise things I want to make some money. I make money on my seahorses. I want to do clowns again.
Not trying to become rich, but would like to someday get a peppermint angel. Lol

That's right! And if you really want something just make her think it's really cool and that it would look perfect in her tank! That's the smart way!

I've always wanted to try breading clowns, those sound like the perfect ones to go with. Now when I go to the store the regular ones are starting to get harder to find. I wonder how long it will be until they turn into the unique ones.

It has been a super long time since I've posted on this! Mainly because I've been hard at work trying to get everything done before the tank arrives. I didn't make it,.. but everything that absolutely needs to get done is done, I will finish up the cabinetry on the stand later. It pops on and off the extruded aluminum with little clips so it's easy to completely remove if I need to.

The tank arrives this week!!!! Friday I'm breaking down the 135 With the help, and 300 gallon stock tank of Aqua Ventures in my area that does tank moves, Saturday the new tank is lifted into place with Aqua Venture's help, and then I get to plumb and put everything back in.

I have the Drawers in at least!

And I have the doors built! Man that takes allot of parts.

But now we shift gears a little bit to the actual setup. I will let you know how it goes!

I'm guessing with all the things I still need to get done, it will be here before I know it lol.

I have an update!!!! That was a super crazy weekend, and every part of me hurts, but the entire system was broken down Friday Night and put into a 300 Gallon stock tank on the living room floor, then Saturday the tank was put in place, and everything was moved back. Dave from Aqua ventures and their access to things like stock tanks, and large mixing containers, and especially all their help getting the tank lifted and on the stand was invaluable. If you live in OKC I highly recommend checking them out for large moves.

During the process I think something might have gotten kicked up from the sand or something because I have lost a couple of fish, and almost every Monti had RTN'ed completely while in holding. It must have been something unexpected that affected things, because the stock tank had plenty of flow from a couple Tunze 6105's and a Gyree 4000. Temperature and Salinity were maintained properly and that bin held all the live rock that has been in the system all along.

I don't have many pictures because I still have allot of work to do, but I have a couple I could share here.

Here's most of the coral and rock in the stock tank, the additional Tunze was added after the tank was completely down.

Still lots to do!!! The cabinetry of course, but more than that I still need to take down the 100 gallon stock tank I have in the Sump Room and find space in this tank for all that coral. The big torch I have reserved a perfect spot for, but now I'm not totally sure it will fit. We will see.

More work has been done! The tank is settling in pretty well and I'm doing my best not to touch anything. Whatever it was that killed the Montipora and Anacropora seems to have stayed in that 300 gallon stock tank, because things seem to be recovering now and corals in the frag tank on the same system were not affected once everything went back in.

I've taken down the 100 gallon stock tank in the Tank room finally, which means I can get to my Frag tank again to maintain it, that's a huge relief.

I 3d printed little holders for all my power bricks, and made a back panel to mount things under the stand to clean that up a little bit. It's not done yet because 3d printers aren't the fastest, but we are looking better every day.
Of course little pup has to be in every photo lol

I started making better progress on the lower cabinets this weekend too. I decided to add a little narrow bartop to the top of the lowers so I'll need to cut them down a little bit to accommodate, but it's super nice to see doors ready for primer:

Also! My powder blue is in the main tank!
