I posted this on RC but havent gotten much help at all....can any of you fellows offer me advice

I just received my bulkhead today and it requires a hole of diameter 2.25"
how far from the side and bottom of my 40g tank should I have the hole drilled?

the drain will be inside the overflow box

the hole must be drilled on the back panel of the tank, not on the bottom

TIA

SF just centers the hole on the overflow box. Which is usually located a few inches or so from the side. Trust me they do not use any predetermined measurments to determine hole location. It has not been a problem with any tank that have been drilled, the key is using the correct drill and a good bit.

As long as you leave enough room for the lip of the bulkhead once installed, there really isn't a requirement especially on a tank that size. Typically I go about 1" from the side. If you plan to use a durso type standpipe you want the top of you hole to be positioned where you want the water level inside the overflow to be. This is usually very close the the bottom of the oveflow teeth so you don't hear a waterfall effect in the overflow.....
