my favorite return pump is no longer available. :( if you can find a Velocity T series pump, that is what i would use. either the T1, T2, or T3 depending on application. the T4 just does not have the oomph. these pumps are dead silent. can handle decent head pressure, so you are actually going to get the flow you expect, and not loose significant amounts of it because of the 5' of head height from the sump. they push into the 20' range. their only drawback is that they do heat the system (they use water cooling for the motor, that is why they are dead silent).

if you can ever find them, get them. you will not be disappointed.

i have/had plenty of Mag pumps. they are ok. great pump if you need to get one. they are noise, and they are a bit finicky especially if you keep you Ca levels elevated. they can blow up.

Do you want the best return? Eheim.

Quiet one pumps fail (I like them (electricity savings) but I have to replace them every 3-4 due to electrical leaks). I use them for mixing pumps only now. Magdrives are very good and last for years but Eheim pumps last for decades. I also can't complain about Red Dragon pumps. Iwaski if you are going external.

Get a couple of Koralia 1400 rather than Magnums. However, unless this is a frag system, I don't see any reason to waste money on anything other than a Vortech... unless you really really like Tunze.

I would have to say Sicce Syncra's series....it is the quietest most energy effecient pump I have owned. Second choice would be Eheim, but they use quite a bit more energy to move the water than the Sicce's. I run a 1262 on my 90 g. and it has plenty of oomph. I actually have it throttled back because it overwhelms the drain.

As for powerheads, I am with doc on this one Vortechs would be my first choice, but several 2-3 Koralia's that push about 1500-2000 gph would get the job done (if I couldn't afford an MP40 or a couple MP10's). I had 2-k4's in my 90 g. and would have liked to have one more.

But now days, I won't spend another penny on a powerhead that isn't a Vortech.

I have been looking at that one, you like it alright?
its a good pump. Submerible or external, lowish wattage. If you put a rubber vibration pad under the pump its virtually silent. easy to dissasemble and clean. my skimmer pump is more noisy.

Shoot wish i read G~ post on mag pumps. I have a mag 7 comin today to replace my old marineland maxijet. I like mag pump. Also aquaticlife has a good submersible pump. For external pumps iwaki makes a great pump. As long as its the Japanese motor. However it is rather loud IMO. Dolphin makes an awesome pump. It's super quiet and comes with quick connects. I love those pumps.

How is it overated in GPH? Didn't a recent study show that its inline with what is advertised?
Ive ran several of the smaller pumps from the nano-750 i a few different ways and the flow couldn't compare to when I matched it with cheap aqueons. I've also seen the difference in 1650gph flow which was 2 of ea in a 130g and i really thought the koralia was really being out done by a by far cheaper product but its just my opinion..

I expect flow pattern had something to do with your perspective of the flow rate, koralia has wider flow pattern which may feel lower then it is. Cheap power heads tend to have directly narrow flow which feels stronger. You can't denied the result of the study. Even Tunze who was very unfavorable in the study confirmed the results.

What about Iwaki mag drive pumps? I purchased one used off craig's list and haven't installed it yet. Guy I bought it from says its a very quiet pump anyone use one of these. They have good reviews.
Interesting.....do you know the seller? I'd have unboxed it and dropped that pump in a pail of water and tested it to see how quiet and if it runs.
