Hello Everyone:

What are the advantages of running a Sump? What exactly does a sump do? Do I need one for a 75g reef?

I am a newbie starting a 75g reef setup using the natural (Berlin) system (LR, LS, Protein Skimmer, someday Corals, Inverts, & Fish). I have been following these two texts: " The New Marine Aquarium" by Michal S. Paletta and "The complete book of the Marine Aquarium" by Vincent B. Hargreaves. Nether text so much as mentions a Sump or Refugium.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to The Reef Tank!

A sump is simply a container of water seperate from the display tank. It has many uses and benefits, all of which are described well in the following links...

Hope that helps you understand the concept better.

Check out the recommended books on this site for more books on the subject of reefkeeping.

Good luck and glad to have you aboard!
