i was interested if anyone has any experience with the fluval 305 or any fluval filter product? i have read a good bit of good reviews about them and would appreciate any opinions on the matter. i have a 60 gallon reef tank and was curious which would be better. thank you any advise u give.

I have a fluval 305, I dont use it for salt water but I have had it for probably over a year, no problems, i know it has picked up some sand due to rowdy fish but it still runs silently and leak free. NEVER have had a single problem with this tank so I guess it is doing its job.

I have a fluval 405 and a 205 on my 55g, I love them! They are quiet, easy to clean and the only time I've ever had a problem with leaking was when I needed to replace the seals (after they were several years old and not properly cared for by the previous owners) and each seal cost like 4.99 and 6.99.

I had one on my 75g reef, tho i only used it for chemical filtration. I ran it without any foam pads. I had no sump /wet-dry or anything like that, so i used the fluval for using a bag of carbon and/or purigen... and other than the water flow, it was used for nothing more.

If you get/use one, i'd recommend using it the same way. You really don't want to use the mechanical filtration in it , since it will only work against the tank in short order.

And you you DO get one, pick up a extra impeller cover b4 you do the any cleaning of the impeller down the road. They seem to get brittle over time, and you don't want to be stuck w/ a broken Fluval and not have a spare cover,,,trust me,,by about the 2nd-3rd time over the years, i learned to have a spare at the ready , just for when the locking tabs break off when you either take off the cover or re-install it after removing a impeller to clean it.And they WILL break!
