Has anyone used tufa rock as a base? I read that it can affect pH in the long run. I'm looking for some good base rock to liven up...any input? Thanks

What is Tufa rock?

I've heard about this rock. Isn't it a light brown, porous rock? I've looked around, but have been unable to find any. When I was up in Washington, someone was getting it from Home Depot. Down here in Ca., I've yet to find any. Hope you have better luck.

TUFA



COLOR - Cream to tan and brown
REEF SAFE - Most tufa is reef safe
HARDNESS - From very soft to very hard
CORALINE GROWTH - Grows the fastest on some pieces we have tested
SHAPE - Some pieces have good shapes depending on source

This light brown rock grows coraline algae very fast. Most tufa was formed by geothermal waters rich in minerals. This can be good or bad so use reef safe tufa.

Conclusion: Most tufa was formed by geothermal waters rich in minerals. I would be very concerned about what minerals are in the rock! So is there really reef safe tufa? Interesting!

Thanks for the info Johnny, the tufa I have was bought a pet store. Is there anyway to tell if it's okay to use these pieces or not? Are there any measures I should take before sticking them into my tank? Do you know anything about tomato clown behavior and hosting??

Well I am assuming clownfish/anenome behavior! Correct? I not fond of people having an anenome unless they have a very well established tank and even at that they tend to wander and can get sucked up in your overflow box, powerheads, etc. By moving around they can sting other corals as well.
I have an anenome in my 2 years + reef tank and hope to get a pair of clarki clownfish for this anenome. It is a BTA (Entacmaea quadricolor).
Clownfish do well without an anenmoe but they will host other type corals besides an anenome! HTH

tomato and colt coral

I've heard that tomato clowns will host colt corals, what are some other "easy to keep" corals that would be compatible? I'm not really wanting a anemone, but I feel as if I should get the clown somsort of buddy. She seems like a clingy sort of fish...has already been lovin' on a rock.

Is it safe to introduce a juvenile tomato to an adult?

tomatoes seem to host with jsut about anything.

mine is hosting with one of my poweheads at night. sleeping right next to it, till lights on, floating on its side right at the top of the tank between powerhead and glass :funny:
