Hey folks,

I am not the computer geek that I'd like to be. Is there anyone out there that could recommend a popup blocker that has really good filters to stop the crap that keeps coming up while I am typing to this forum? I went to c|net to read the evaluatioins there but there seem to be a lot of shortcomings to much of the ones available.

It has gotten completely out of hand, and seems to be the worst while on TRT... (sorry Brooke)

actually it sounds like you need something to look for spyware. There are no pop-ups on this site. I have never seen a pop-up appear while im here.

Sounds like something has put some adware on your computer. I had this for some time, but I had to format recently and have not had the problem since. Do a google search on "adware/spyware software" and you will probably find something that can look through your registry and find the adware, and get rid of it.

That is one thing I really like about TRT, you can go anywhere you want and there is not obtrusive pop-ups.

Tom use ad aware on your computer there are no pop ups on here. ad aware is free.

trt is popup free - well actually trt has ONE popup, notifying you if you get a private message from another member, while online. but i think you have to turn that feature on. other than that, no pop ups here.

the spyware that's been embedded in your computer looks for key words, when it see's them, it gives a popup.

which would be why you get it the worst at trt, because there is so much reading, and lots of words for it to skim.

Definately run ad aware, and then get one of the free popup stoppers like this one http://www.panicware.com/popupstoppercompare.html and just get the free one, they usually work pretty good.

The latest version of Netscape has a built in pop up blocker. That is what i use, and I love it. And like everyone else said, I get no pop-ups on TRt either.

Tom get "Spyware - Search and Destroy". It will clean up the spyware and alsohelpreduce thepop-ups created by them. The other thing to look into is a better Anti-virus with a firewall. I use PC-cillin 2003 and it does a great job of not letting those annoying pop-up type advertisements make it to my monitor...

Well, I just ran the most updated version of the spybot search and distroy and have spent the greater part of 4 hours trying to get back on line, Finally ended up removing their "bad site" list and the program let me get back on AOL, it makes you wonder if AOL is listed as one of the bad sites now...

HHHMMMMM....

But I have to say that since I've been back online tonight, there haven't been ANY popups...

The Search and distroy found about 15 different Spyware files on my puter, I have to wonder how long they have been there...

Well first I would get rid of AOL but that's another discussion. I have pop up blocker from Earthlink. http://www.earthlink.net/home/software/popupblocker/totalaccessdownload/
I'm not sure if it's available for non Earthlink/Mindspring subscribers but it works great.

Doug - It is Netscape ver 7.x I have had no problems with it at all. No crashes, no freezes, no nothing. It is great.

I find it interesting that NS looks more like IE the fancier it gets, tho I always used NS I hate the puters at work with IE for net function

Yeah, that would be the smart thing, I get sooooo much junk mail as well, in the past, I have never had these problems with other services, but now, I am REALLY out in the boonies, and dsl and anything but local access aol is out of the question...

I am looking into 2 way satellite service, as I can only get satelite (dish) tv here (no cable. The example of satellite access I have seen is fantastic, and I'd be pretty much able to go anywhere (except when it rains really hard...)
