Would removing the bio bale from the side compatment of a cpr bacpak skimmer and throwing some macro algae and hanging a light on the side work as a small semi-refugiam for a 50 gallon reef? Im mainly looking for some added nitrate reduction and I hear the bio bale doesnt really do anything but trap detrius anyways.

Any thoughts?

If I remove the bio bale, would I need to do it slowly or can I just drag it all out at once?

I would think you could drag it out all at once. I've never used those skimmers so I'm not sure exactly how big they are but I have a general idea. I'm not sure that it would yield enough growth to make a big difference, better to get a 10 gal fuge or something like that. Oh heck, while your at it, get a 50 gal fuge!!!

I'd remove the bio-bale slowly, maybe 1/4 at a time.

Don't put macro in the compartment, it will float to the top, eventually clog the return pipe and you'll have a flood The bio-bale is jammed in there so it doesn't move, but the macro wouldn't be. I put my heater in the extra compartment so I don't have to look at it in the tank.

Most likely wont make a difference.

Adding Macro to your chamber will most likely not make a big enough difference for you to notice. Try building a Coil deNitrator. Cheap and they work well.

BTW, how do you like your BAK PAK, I might add one to my 29L Reef set up... Do you have the BAK PAk or the BAK PAK2?
