Put a couple of drops of di water on the glass and close the cover, hold it up to bright light and look through......then turn the eyepiece to bring the numbers in to focus.....Read the SG. Should be 1.0....Repeat w/ salt water if its calibrated, which it should be.

Once you get used to it, you will be quite happy you got one.....they are great

I usually run mine under my RO drinking water faucet to get the salt off, then dry it w/ whatever shirt I'm wearing.....So yeah, a T shirt is fine :)

Ok....so I know what a "portable" refractometer looks like....who's got a pic of one that isn't "portable"?

I hadn't wondered this until I reread the original post..HMMmmmm
