So I kind of figured that the show would have run of the mill "experts" doing things that may interest the general public, like flashing "rare" fish like lionfish... I think, after reading a few of their tips on how to start a reef tank, that the tank builders, or at least the people writing these tips, are morons that are working in an exponentially evolving field, running off of what we thought was the best methodology and equipment 15 years ago.

What is your opinion on the show? I fear the problem with people jumping into the hobby, with little to no knowledge, is only going to get worse.
From what I read, it sounds very similar to "Deadliest Catch". Making something complicated look overly simple, unfortunately I think this is going to create a new era of "geniuses" whose credentials are watching a TV show. Does watching House make me a doctor? I feel like this is uncool for the hobby, I hope idiots stay away.
It's a reality show that goes behind the scenes of one of the largest acrylic tank building companies, Acrylic Tank Manufacturing. http://www.acrylicaquariums.com/

I would expect to see mostly outrageous tank builds mixed in with typical reality show family drama. http://animal.discovery.com/tv/tanked/about-the-show.html

It does if you watched it while staying at a Holiday Inn.

The sad thing is they make it look easy to reef, then you will have people going to LFS all over, getting duped by many of them and end up killing a boat load of fish in the process.

+1 That what the first thing I thought of when I saw the preview. Well Crap, there go the prices of livestock and equipment in this hobby. Like they weren't high enough already.

Kinda like the movie, "Gone In 60 Seconds" 6 Months after that movie came out, Fastback Mustang prices went through the roof!
ELENORE! Good for someone who had one for sale. Bad for the hobbyists.

EXACTLY!!! Since that movie came out, people have put that car as the pinnacle of classic mustangs....and it's simply NOT.

The value of my 65 fastback (in it's present condition) went from about $8000 to $14,000 so that's good. BUT, I'd like to have another one and right now can't afford to buy one. So it has it's +/-.

I do like the idea of the show since I'm in the hobby. The same way I like to watch Car Craft Magazine, My Classic Car, Two Guys Garage...and other shows like that.
I am interested in watching the show but I feel conflicted. I like the idea behind it, but hate what it will bring.

One of the guys running Reef2Reef said that he knows the company that is doing the show and that they have cut out a lot of the educational stuff and throw in the goofing off parts.

For a network that use to be about educating the public, stealing from our education has sure come easy. If I end up watching this show and dislike it, I don't think I will ever watch Animal planet again.
The problem is when it comes to shows like this it's all about ratings. Goofing off will get more ratings than facts.
i seen a commercial n everyone in the room just looked over to me expecting me to say somthing.
I watched it and the didnt really involve reefs in any way. Its just big flashy tanks with expensive fish for rich people. The did stress to people that you should have a qt tank with any system. The one they build was 30 grand, but at least theyre trying to keep people from killing fish.
You guys are right about the idiot recruiting, but a percentage of those people will actrually do it right and become good reefers. Its really no different than any other method of getting into this hobby. Some people will fail and creatures will die, its dark side to this.
+1 bring some bad stuff...

I'm having flash backs of 101 Dalmatians, that taco bell dog, and that Memo movie....

once those movies come out everyone buys up the stuff, then it dies, but a TV show will keep it going

Rustl3r,

I don't mind so much the people killing stuff, before learning (just like me) but I ALWAYS wanted a reef tank, now its going to be like showing the world a hidden island everyone will want to take a trip... :(
im gonna give it one episode. im on the edge of how i feel about it. i think its just gonna be a bunch of goofballs building expensive tanks and displaying them. similar to how companies advertise a pico tank. real nice and pretty with all kinds of sps and lps inside of it when we know its not really realistic. the general public watching it will want to go buy a ton of stuff and build a 500 gal reef using 1 canister filter. but, i guess well see how it goes. it might entertain us

I can't use a cannister filter for my 500g tank build? Great...now what

I see it as a continuation of the "dumbing down of America". Ratings now seem to be how dumb can we make people on TV look so the rest of the idiots watching feel better about themselves. Here is my idea for "Survivor". Put them all on Snake Island and come back in a week. If anyone is still alive, they win.

Hells Kitchen
Tattoo Parlor
Jersey Shore
Millionaire Matchmaker
etc, etc, etc....

Complete jokes, but people watch them...This one has a chance to be educational, but they'll skip that stuff for antics to get ratings up...sad really.

It will lead to a burst in tank purchasing, but many of them will try and fail and lose interest immediately...the lucky ones will find TRT.
See less See more
And the rest of us will be able to pick up hardly used equipment for cheap when they fail at it..
Hey I like Hells Kitchen! To watch people thinking they are all that get a reality check. Never heard of the rest.

I'm with ya on that emkbass!

theres a perc for ya.
I just watched a couple of the Extras Videos. Wow! I can't believe these guys, they really don't know what the heck they are talking about. Top fish for the home, SHARKS? Are they kidding, how many people can accommodate the size tank needed for sharks in their homes!
