Anything porous will absorb sound. Porous and flexible is best (foam, fabric, even filter floss to a certain extent).

I've used cheap towels to dampen sound before with decent results and just threw them in the washer ever so often.

If you want to go fancy, the stuff they sell for quiting computers has a minimum of heat build-up capacity in its design, but would probably cost quite a bit.

what do you mean by heat build up.
Most good sound dampening material is also an insulator to some extent. That means heat retention in places you may not want.
