next week i'm going to take the tanks in to a local glass shop for drilling. (they charge $8 per hole on the 75 and $6 per hold on the 20L and 29g)

so before going in, i'd like some input about my pipes. this will also help with my pvc parts list.

i'd LIKE to do the standpipe OUTSIDE the tank, and just have the elbow and bulkhead inside the tank. this would make it eaiser to work on the standpipe, and install it, clean it, etc...

but i'm not sue if i can do it outside the tank. i dont think a standpipe holds any siphon, so it should be ok. richard durso has a pic of a standpipe on an external overflow box that shows the pipe outside and only the elbow inside ( a street ell, connected to the bulkhead)

so will this work? or does it have to be inside? the main reason i need to know is because if it is outside, there will be fewer fittings to buy, and the hole will be drileld higher. if it is inside, there are more fittings, and the hole will be lower.

also, should i put in 2 - 1" drains. or just 1- 1 1/4" drain?

oh, my tank is a 75E with a tempered bottom, so drillign the bottom of the tank is not an option, it has to be the side or back. but i'm drilling the side since the pipes will be hidden within the cabinet unit.

any ideas? thanks!

Hey Jay
I tried both setups but found this one is easier to set up and heck a lot quieter. I made two modifications to this though, one I went up from a one inch bulkhead to 1 1/4" with a reducer and instead ov several holes i cut out a slot in the top portion. You will understand once you see the link above. This one I stand on that It is way easier to tune and set up, and it works quieter.

Just a thought, as far as inside or out, I guess being you don't have the overflow box humm well hard to say but I like solid setups, if something weird happened it could in theory back flow and spew water on the floor somehow, so I'd probably put it inside and just cover it up with rocks. That call is yours, I see no other reason to put it inside you tank.

Nice job man, keep it up and thanks fo rthe time you spend posting these things up for everyone to see. I'm bad for that myself.

scott. i also used the stockman standpipe on my current tank, and also upped it to 1 1/4" as well. and yeah i found it really easy to setup and modify. i did the hole in the side of the endcap as well, instead of in the top, that way i could jsut rotate the endcap to get the desired airflow.

i'm sure i'll again use a stockman on this tank, i'm just trying to figure wether it will hurt to have it outside the tank.

btw: this tank will have an overflow internally wit ha black surface, i jsut didnt draw it in the picture. i'm putting in a full side overflow, so i'll have plenty of room for working in there, and plenty of room for the drain and return line) and the drain line for the cls as well.

My 180 is drilled towards the top and is set up like you have pictured. The main reason I did mine like this is that my sump is located in another room and this gave me more fall. The other reason was that I didn't have to worry about any stand modifications, as the PVC runs outside the stand.
It is quiet.
I did a couple of modifications to mine, if you are intersted just PM me Jay.

Outside

I have all my bulkheads on the sides of my tanks! I have tried several different ways to plumb them! What I have found to be the best is like your first drawing except that I have the street ell facing up acting like a small surface skimmer. I tried it with the ell facing down, but I found that it still created a siphon when the pump was turned off & the tank would drain down to the ell, which was more water than the sump could hold? You could try & experiment with the size of the hole in the cap at the top of the Durso to break the siphon better? But I think the water being above the ell creates enough head pressure to keep the siphon going?

Here's a pic of my fuge that has the surface type overflow (upper right corner) also check out my pics in the photo gallery. My whole system is gravity fed without any siphons & only back- fills the sump by about three too four gallons when the power is off?

 oops I missed that the first time  If your going to have a overflow box then you won't have to worry about the system draining!

Here's a pic of how they did it before the corner overflows! My tank was made back in Oct of 1992 according to the tag on the bottom (I bought it used)

thanks for the replys everyone.

yeah i'm building an overflow into the tank, on the end, instead of jsut in the corner. so i wont need to worry about the whole tank draining.

looks like i can go ahead and put the entire standpipe outside the tank. now i jsut have to figure a way to build a stockman/durso combo unit :D i've got a few different ideas. this oculd end up being the fatman pipe :)
