I LIVE IN ESCONDIDO CA, AND HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO LOCATE SOUTHDOWN OR OLD CASTLE SAND. ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN LOCATE SOME, I'LL BE GOING TO L.A. TO FIND SOME. PLEASE HELP...

My understanding is Home Depot doesn't carry Southdown on the West Coast. If you're willing to spend some money, try Pure Caribbean Aragonite. Otherwise, regular (silica) play sand works fine.

You will have a hard time finding southdown in Cali. Most HD out west don't carry it. I would recomend doing searches on every forum you can find.

Pure Caribbean Aragonite is a great product, but more expensive.

As for the silica playsand, you will find 100 posts that make you super nervous about using and 100 posts about how its as good or better than anything else. I have even heard that if you can find the sugar sized pure white silica used for sandblasting that it can be a very good substitute.

My problem is that I am a chicken***t whien it comes to my tank, and I looked to curb risk at any cost. So if you're like me the extra $$ is worth it for the pure caribbean aragonite. But search around for people in your area that might have bought a pallet of the southdown and have left overs to sell. Thats how I got mine.

well i'm willing to give it a try but i really want to hear from more people. this will be my first reef tank and i really want to get off on the right foot.

i picked up some crushed marble at my local home depot, you prob read about it in another thread. what do you think will it work or am i doomed.

Before you dismiss silica sand, here's an article you should read: Silica in Reef Aquariums. Also read the Bingman study referenced there.

Silica has no buffering capability, but you'll end up dosing Ca/Alk regardless. Silica feeds diatoms, but the article above dismisses that. The biggest negative for silica is it can scratch your tank walls much more easily than aragonite.
