Is it possible to put a baby banded cat shark (5") in a 300 gallon reef tank. It will have minimal rock work and a soft sand bed. I am wanting just one and when it gets large I will find a bigger better home for it...if I can even get one. I was worried about it with my clown fish, mandarin, gobys etc. Is this safe or no. I hear no but then see them on youtube just fine. Please let me know guys. I appreciate all help, no bashing wanted but constructive criticism is appreciated. thank you.

+1 to that. They are mostly bottom feeders and if kept well fed should only want to eat what you fed them. HOWEVER I wouldnt expect him to leave the other fish alone that do fit in his mouth. It will eat any crustacean in the aquarium. They are more nocturnal too so while your fish are resting, JAWS is cruising.

I think your chances with the other fish are hit and miss...most sharks are not overly aggressive toward other fish if they are well fed...that's how large public aquariums keep so many of them together with other fish without too much issue...but my honest opinion is don't do it...the theory that you will find it a better home when it gets to big is a good one, but in reality re-homing a larger shark to someone who can/will care for it in an adequately sized tank is very hard to do. The other issue is most of the bottom dwelling sharks species are quite frankly boring IMO...they are typically not very active during the day. If I was going to keep sharks or rays I would only do it in a very large tank that was specifically designed for them. I'm in no way bashing, just my opinion on the subject.

awesome well thanks guys, I guess i will steer clear of sharks for the time being. But i had actually had plans with the local dallas zoo and aquarium for them to take him when he got too big. But if he eats my fish then its not worth it to me. Is there anything that is shark like that wouldn't be a predator to all of my livestock? thanks again guys.

Well the dallas aquarium has a gigantic elegance coral. I actually love their seahorse tank setup also. The way the dwa has it set up with reefs that mimic the different oceans ie Fiji, indopacific, red sea. things like that. Reallly neat exhibit i spent at least 4 hours just gazing at those tanks. Beautiful set up. Highly recommend not going on a weekendl LOL.
