Sounds like he is still alive but about to pass away. Usually they fall apart during there last days from my experience.

serpent star
Hi all im new to saltwater tanks so heres the deal i got a serpent star and a sand sifting star yesterday i aclimated them. today the serpent looks pinkish andlimp. i thought for sure he was dead so i went to pick him up and he droped a leg. dont they only drop legs while still alive for protection?
