hello i was thinking about my live rock i am going to get here soon and i understand that most of what is on it is moslikely going to die during the cycle of my 10 gal.
well i was thinking maybe i can just use some of the rock at first to go throght the cycle and save my other rock in a tub or bucket under lights with some sort of pump to keep the water moving if needed and keep them there until the cycle is done so then i can put them in the tank after the killing cycle. i want to do this because the rock i am getting may have lots of coral sea stars and such on it.

would it be possible to do this?
please help:confused:

The best thing you could do to help avoid a cycle that will kill off the corals and such is try to get as much water from an established aquarium as possible then be sure to have as little die off on the LR by keeping it wet the whole time it is transferred.

I like the way you think, but I don't think that you can avoid a cycle with out water from an established tank. Even if you used a different container the cycle will happen in that container because there isn't enough beneficial bacteria in your water column.

The lack of Bacteria is the reason the cycle happens in the first place. If you can keep your corals in a friends tank until the cycle in complete you would be better off. But the water from an existing tank will help to shorten the cycle by a HUGE amount.

Good LUCK!
cool i know a guy i can talk to for that hmmmmm i already have water salt and sand in the tan but i can take more water out store it for my next water change and use the new water?
dang i cant get the water but i can get water from the guy that is selling me the live rock that i can use for my tub idea
any thoughts on this thread

The majority of the beneficial bacteria lives on the live rock and sand, not in the water column.
but it would or may work if i use established water on this idea right
I stand corrected. ilovesoda is right that the majority of the beneficial bacteria lives on the rocks and not in the water. There is some that lives in the water though and using water from a healthy established tank will help you.

Adding live rock at any point has the potential to start your cycle over again so not adding it at first and then introducing it all at once won't give you the desired effect. You could in theory start with a small amount of the rock in your tank with the corals and let it sit for a while then introduce the other rock and coral slowly.

I am not sure I understand everything correctly but it kind of sounds like you are trying to start a brand new tank as if it were already established. IMO that is never a good idea. Work slowly. It will turn out better for you.

GOOD LUCK!
alright ill put it all in
I just wanted to clarify that I am saying just put it all in with no livestock. Put the corals and other things in a tank that is already established until the cycle is over. Don't just throw all the animals in with the rock. If it doesn't kill them it will at the very least cause them some problems.

Pretty sure you knew that but I just wanted to make sure my advice was clear.
