I was told to use a soft but new tooth brush to clean them. Is this safe are there other ways??

Thats the way I clean them if needed. If it's really bad... siphon salt water into a container... put the rock in the container and clean it there.. then put it back into the tank.

Turbo snails!! :D :D

But seriously, is this just a mild algae problem or is the tank totally covered? Turbo snails are pigs and will really work over those rocks. If you can find Mexican Turbos, they eat bubble algae too - well, atleast in my tank!:) It would be best to get a variety of snails but a pic of your tank would be great!

Derm,

Depending on the algea, I use a toothbrush or a turkey baster, combined with a temporary fine mesh filter in my sump to catch to residue. Frequent cleaning with a turkey baster works wonders on your reef.
