Just got a basic plastic rubbermaid 20gal trash can that I wanted to fill up with water and use as a top off tank with an ATO switch. I've rinsed the trash can out to remove dust - anything else I should clean it with? I'm a little afraid to use any chemicals or soaps since they might stick around after the rinse and get into my tank. Any advise here?

+1! Vinegar is the best cleaner for any aquarium equipment. Heck, we use it to clean just about everything else in our house too.

Great to know! In case anyone ends up getting this same container - it's the BRUTE Container 2620 Grey model. The bottom is stamped with NSF STD 2 Food Container which (apparently) means it's safe to store food preparing materials in. Further searching showed the container is also approved by the USDA for meat and poultry storage and complies with a bunch of regulations and acronyms that I didn't recognize. All in all, I think it's safe to use this for water. :)
