·i know there is a dsb thread but what are your opinions on remote dsbs???
Ya gotta let them mature... especially if the issue is top substrate sediments, good group of Holothruian cukes along with the proper set of assort34ed detritus consumers would have made short work of these fallout substances. I like the idea of a bare bottom detritus trap though, especially if it has a conical bottom that could be opened on occasion to remove the settled detritus.mojoreef said:The detritus would fall out onto the DSB, after awhile the DSB could not keep up with the amount of detritus being built up.
Well the sand bed is about 8 months old and if you add in the swap of it, it would be about 3 years. For critters, I have all the usuals, pods , worms, about a 150 nass. snails, 3 conches and the mother of all serpant stars. I am not a big fan of cukes, but I figured I was OK.Ya gotta let them mature... especially if the issue is top substrate sediments, good group of Holothruian cukes along with the proper set of assort34ed detritus consumers would have made short work of these fallout substances

Now New and Improved! With the natu-grazer algae digesting pad built into the handle!
Yeah Doug will be the source for a few weeks now, Mr. Comedy!mojoreef said:To funny DOugthose meds must be working.
nope, the swap is just like starting over, although you have a BIG head start in seeding the sand bed and you have the advantage of mature adults in the sand bed capable of reproducing, you still have clean sand grains without the periphytonic communities established on the surface of each grain. Competition will occur to colonize these new "real estates" for optimal growth of the corresponding organisms. Maturity will occur when competiton for this space reaches a standoff and only occasional sand bed population fluxes will occur.mojoreef said:Well the sand bed is about 8 months old and if you add in the swap of it, it would be about 3 years.
now there ya go Mikey, got to think outside the box of "Normal" leftovers for the sand bed cleanup...mojoreef said:For critters, I have all the usuals, pods , worms, about a 150 nass. snails, 3 conches and the mother of all serpant stars. I am not a big fan of cukes, but I figured I was OK.
funny i had the EXACT same exp and did the exact same thingmojoreef said:mnreefman I ran 2 remote DSB's on my tank when I first set it up. 2 X 65 gallon rubbermaid feeding throphs, with about 800gph running through it. I found that they more or lees became a detritus settling tank. The detritus would fall out onto the DSB, after awhile the DSB could not keep up with the amount of detritus being built up. I ended up removing the sand and just vacuuming out the detritus build up as it built.
