Hey guys...

I have a 14 gallon nano, I have around 28 pounds of Fiji live rock, and getting around 12 more pounds today 13 pounds of sand [Not live] its been a week since I set up the tank and four days since I added the rock. I bought the rock fully cured with tons of coralline on it & a few zoanthids [They have doubled in size!]. I have two damsels, the blue and yellow ones, going to keep them for maybe another 2 weeks, just to cycle the tank.

Specific gravity of the tank is currently at 1.024

Parameters...
Ph 8.4
Alkalinity 300 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrate 10-20 ppm

Lighting 2x Power compacts Model 418 W from ViaAqua
Filter Penguin Bio Wheel 100

I'm going to my favorite fish store in around an hour, I really want clown fish, I'm dieing for them, but I know I need to get rid of my two little fighters first and let another week or two for the tank to fully cycle. I'm probably picking up a test kit, a wake maker/ power head (425 GPH or close), some liquid calcium and PH buffer... anything else i should get, like that Coraline algae booster stuff?

I was wondering since I'm acclimating the Coraline right now, maybe I can buy some kind of easy coral, any recommendations? The person i bought the rock from, has these little coral colonies they were only 2"-3" wide and looked like anomie's, he said they were corals and did not move, what are they? Are they hard to keep? I also maybe want some mushrooms or leather corals?

Also some kind of nice looking, not too expensive fish that will do well with damsels or should I just wait? I really want one of those 'Luigi' Fire Shrimp.. a good idea?

Please help!

First of all you do not need that much rock. If you can fit 40lbs of rock in a tank that size and not think "really?, fish?" it means one of a few things. a) Its super dense bad quality live rock (which i see for sale more and more these days. or b) they weighed it wrong/wet or a combination of a and b.

You do not need more than 20lbs of good quality live rock in an appropriately stocked, normal purpose 14 cube.

As far as adding fish you need to wait for the damsels to be removed. They need a territory of their own (each fish) and in a tank that small they may terrorize any other fish depending on how mature they are. I would wait out the cycle before adding anything else. Coral, fish, or shrimp/invert.

In a 14 gallon, 28 pounds is plenty. Buying more live rock is not needed. I would ditch the damsels and wait longer until adding your clown. I hope you know that you will be very limited with what fish you can have and how many. I wouldn't bother with the coralline booster stuff, just keep you parameters in check (Calcium, Alk, and Magnesium). HTH

yeah the rock was wet, not very pours though, some are, but one piece that was around 8" x4" x 2" thick weighed 6 pounds. I also thought how could this be 30 pounds! Oh well i got it for $1/ so called "pound", fully cured really nice Coraline on it.

So you believe the tank should cycle some more?

When you plan on upgrading to your 100g, I recommend getting dry rock..its much cheaper. When do you think you'll upgrade?

As long as its actually real live rock thats quite a deal!
If you need to get a clown pair I would recommend Percula or Ocellaris or Barberi clownfish because they are some of the smaller ones when fully grown. Clarkii, Maroon and Sabae all can get pretty big for a 14.

Yes I would let it cycle longer as well.

Alright, here is a picture. The tank is 17" tall 13" Deep and 15" long. I also don't belive its 30 pounds, but i got a good deal.

We have this spot in our living room that can perfectly house a 48" x 48" x 36" tall aquarium... keeping my fingers crossed my mom will let and ill dig out 5k some where... thats never going to happen I'm sure =) If not there is an awesome deal on a 110 gallon at the LFS for $699 with stand and canopy.

I'm probably upgrading in some time, maybe a year or two. All depends on how quickly i save up this money, and not waste it all on this tank & my koi pond =)

Defiantly going to go with the Ocellaris, the classic! When I get a larger aquarium, I'm dieing to keep a Long Horn Cow, & possibly a blue tang.

Not bad! even with a standard pic you can see its porous.
No need to spend 5k! Where do you live? In decently populated areas you can find 100ish gallon reef ready aquariums used for a couple hundred on craigslist. Sometimes you can find way better deals than that if you can wait! Just saw one with just about everything you would need other than rock, sand and fish for 300
