Ok I have stumbled across a 250 gallon tank with stand, hood, and wet/dry system. Every thing is brand new and was recentley returned to my lfs. I asked the guy at the lfs how much they wanted for the tank and rest of the set up and he replied that he will sell the works plus add lighting (with the exception of the ballests). This tank never had water in it and the wet/dry was never taken out of its packaging. Now can any one tell me if this is a good or bad deal?

Explain in detail the $40 a gallon. I have my quotes for getting everything for the tank now.

Sand: Free
Live Sand: $80
Live Rock: $4.99lbs 250lbs = $1250.00
IO Salt: 49.99 per 50lbs 5 buckets= $250.00
Water: Free
Filtration, skimmer, and plumbing will be done and hooked up except for plug into the tank upon pick up of the tank. All that nice stuff is included with the tank.
Power Heads: $200.00 for all four
Clean up crew will cost around $275.00
this totals to $2055.00

Now if we wanna discuss corals fish and other extras that'll boot the price up after a couple years. But for me to get it started up it actualy won't be all that bad.

The $40 per gal figure seems to be a pretty good figure as far as what it takes to actually set up and stock a reef tank frequently more if you have many losses during the course of a few years. This can be reduced by getting "deals" on equipment and livestock, but even if you get everything at a deal a 250 is a lot of tank to fill and don't forget about water changes, annual bulb replacement, ro/di cartridge replacement, and emergency purchases. My actual spending always exceeds my planned expenses. just my .02

well I figured it was talking about stocking fees and everthing extra but for me to actualy set the tank up I figure that will be the cheapest of all the ventures. The water is not RO but the alge problem is not a concern for inital set up. Its filtered water and has had no ill effects on my tank I have running now to date. Ya gotta remember I live in hicksvile and the water I get through my tap is alot better for a tank than some one in a big city. And yes I forgot about the ballest for the lighting and that will boot me up another 800 dollars on a ruff guess. As for water changes I am not a big beleaver in frequent water changes. I am not saying I don't do them but I do not do them alot. In my 55 I do a 10% once a month and I have had no problems with doing it that way. Another thing I never have to pay more than cost at my lfs because of my history with the lfs. Well excuse me there is one exception and thats I must pay normal price for corals. As for actual cost with the way things are for me over a 4 year period I would go with no more than 30$ a gallon. I know I am a little off on everything and I am not trying to sound like a know it all but what I am trying to do is figure out all the facts.

Congrats on the deal! I'm also thinking that the $40/gallon is fully stocked. At least you realize that your initial investment is just the start - so many people think that's the total investment. :)

Man, that's gonna be sweet. :) Have fun!

Thanks all and yes I got real crappy on getting this deal. I was down at the lfs in the morning checking out everything and realized I have to drive 15 miles with a 8foot long tank that barely will fit in my truck and a 8.5foot stand that will make me keep the tailgate down for the entire drive :(. Then I must figure out how to get the tank into my house considering its as waide as my door. But now atleast the deal is final and I have till august to pay for the whole setup and get it out of the store.
