As some of you know the ballast burnt up in my 12 gallon nano. So is lighting really necessary in a qt tank? I can get a new ballast for $20 from the manufactorer but not sure I want to. This really freaked me out cause it was my 7 year old who turned the light on when it happened. I keep thinking what if had got her and do I really want to take that chance again? Can you use any ballast in these things? The tank is near a huge window that gets full sun if I open the shades so I'm thinking of just leaving the lights out. It's just a qt tank that I keep some lr,snails, crabs that I don't want in the main tank. The only reason its still up is just in case something happens to the other tank I can put everything in the backup. I would really appreciate your opinions.

I'd replace the ballast and get the light working.
What exactly happened when your daughter turned the light on?

When she hit the switch tank crackled then sparks and smoke started pouring out of it. So do I have to go with the manufactor's ballast or any recommendations? I just dont want another burn up.
