Ah the first of many threads for the new tank.

So here is the story.

I have a 55 that is a work of learning, I started having no idea what I was doing, and now I know enough to be dangerous but not enought to be smart ;)

So I wanna plan out this 95 so that I have the best chance of success.

I have the tank, it is acrylic and will need to be cleaned out before any building starts.
Here is what I know.
tank is 3ft by 3ft by 8 in by 8 in 8 40 in -it's a pentagon tank

I like fish
I like corals
I really like color
I keep more fish than I should and I need to skim more.
I hate tank noise
I like diy stuff
I dont' want to mortage my house to build a tank.

that said
here is what I know
It will have sps
I will most likely use MH & T5's to light it
I like a bluer look
I like Actnics
I want my sps to have good color

The sump is going in the basement and I am thinking that the 55 will be the sump.

I want to attach a frag tank to this system in the basement.

I think I need a HUGE skimmer - what would you use?
CLS or powerheads or both?

what would YOU do?

sky is the limit for now :)

Congrats Amy
I'm sorry I didn't get it cleaned up for ya

Sump in the basement is awesome and a durso standpipe is pretty easy to build to quiet the display

get an external return pump

once you move into the basement, you'll find adding another tank is simple

use a rubbermade tub for the sump
use the 55 for the frag tank

:p thanks Kelli

so skimmers...

UV sterilizers yes or no -- why
phospate reactor - why or why not
A UV is going to be really expensive, and although I use one for water clarification I don't think you need one. For it to really be effective on 200G were talking about a 4 foot long, emperor aquatics 50W unit,.. and even then it's usefulness is questionable.

I think a Phosphate reactor is probably a good idea once the system gets a little older, but I don't think it's required when the system is new. There not very pricey though, and one with a small amount of media might be a good idea on your 55 right now. I'm not sure how much I like them, but I am seriousally considering adding one in the near future to my 180.

Skimmer for 200G on the cheap???? Well,. octpus is the first that comes to mind, but I'm not sure if it's as cheap as your thinking,.. How much are you thinking?

well since this is the lets gather ideas thread price tags dont' count yet.

I know I learned this on the 55 -- the skimmer is WAY more important than I thought so a large chuck of the budget shoudl go there !

I want information in this thread a build thread will come later
so name the skimmer you would use on this system...

knowing I tend to put too many fish in and still want good coral color in sump please brand size and why you like it

I use my 55g as a sump on my 180. It has worked well for me.

I agree with Whiskey about the UV and the phosphate reactor.

Skimmer...there are quite a few good choices, but most of them are relatively big dollars.

CLSs for the win!

Congrats, and best of luck!

cheap skimmer for the bioload you want is probably a high hope. I've heard some great things about the ATI bubblemaster skimmers (maybe the 200 model), something to look into. you're probably in the range of my skimmer for the tank, which is a EuroReef CS250 (RS250 equivalent). if you look them up, not so cheap.

Queit wise, though, you're going to have most of the equipment in the basement, right? Doesnt that squelch all the noise? Outside of the tank flow (minus the return pump) and maybe canopy fans, what noise is of concern?
