So i recently bought a Pencil Sea Urchin well i bought it yesterday. And while it was in its bag it was fine. but when i finally left it in my tank it stooped moving. the Spines are still attached but it has not moved since. i thought it was because i had left him in a cave and he was having difficulty moving or something so i moved him to an area with algae to graze on. other than that that is my current situation does any one have any suggestions and or experience they can tell me about?
they do that sometimes. wont move for several hours or a day at a time. if it looks like they are stuck they probably airnt. I thought mine was stuck quite a few times but he is never in the same spot the next day. when I first put mine in he didn't move for almost 2 days. make sure to match water params as close as possible when doing water change, they don't take durastic swings well at all. if he is unhappy with something you have done he will go to the top part of the tank and a spawning event will ensue and the 'skin' of his spines may shed. this is a sign of stress. plenty of coralline is part of a good diet. ive read they can prey on fish & decorator shrimp but I don't see him moving that fast to do so, so maybe while they are sleeping?? watch any frags that are not secured, he wont necessarily harm the coral but will go after algae at the base and could damage the coral in doing so.
other then that he is pretty awesome! im glad I have one and they are def something to look at, especially up close. you will see bits of calcium carbonate on top of him, that's actually poop he will make your rock pearly white!
