Not a true Refugium, question

Due to limited space I want to setup a refugium in a separate small tank, size 5 to 10 gal tank. Can this be done successfully, and then transfer the food to the main tank with a net? Also can substrate be used instead of fine grain sand? The reason is I have lots of extra stuff that I'm not using and wanted to experiment with this type of setup, however, if it is not advisable then the project is off.

well thats hard to do a breeding tank thats 5 gallons, best bet it to tie it into the system. than you can at least get the benefit of the macro algae

Welcome to TRT!!

this is not what you want to hear, but using refugiums as a source of food is a myth. what they end up being is a collection point for detritus, which contains loads of phosphates. phosphates are what will cause algae. first in the fuge, then in the display.

I know you said "as a source of food" but do you see any benefit to having a fuge on a reef tank?

Using a refugium works very well to help provide a food source for your tank. You can take bits algae from the refugium and place them in the main tank for a few days then return it to the refugium. Refugium have been used successfully for many many years and can prove to be an enjoyable part of your reef tank. Good luck and welcome!
