I LOVE this camera! Excellent macros! I have it, and very happy with it. Most of my pics on the board is with it.

It only takes CompactFlash cards, right? Not SmartMedia?

Can you change the lenses?

Does the zoom do well enough for "distant" things, like a bird in a tree? (I realize that's a relative question)

How about catching action shots? I realize none of the under $1000 are quick, but is this one "quick enough" considering?

Thanks!
Shirley :)

there are threads on the lens so you can add lens...I havn't done it, but I see the threads. As for distant things... the herd of camels shot... those were far in the distance and I was able to zoom in well. I didn't even use the digital zoom part for that either.

As for action..what kind of action? Pending on the setting you choose, you should be able to take action shots. (you just select a quicker shutter speed) It can take like 30sec of video, but I don't know how to do that yet. heh heh

Lower end digitals have a delay, sort of, so it's really impossible to get the very moment of a Tae Kwon Do kick that you want, for example.

I don't mean blur, I mean, will it shoot when you click it, or is there a delay that means the fish has turned by the time the pic is actually taken?

Thanks so much, Jeremy!

Hey Shirley

just my 2¢ worth...

my film camera is a Nikon 8008, with pretty fast response time. Plus a huge flash (my husband used it for some of his work...)

I bought a Nikon CoolPix 885. I love it, but it's hard to get used to the different responses of a digital camera. Of course, my use is just for recreation and not crucial like it is for you.

Casey, how do you like your Olympus c700 compared to your friend's Nikon 4500?

My son Troy has an Olympus and said he's so pleased with the light and color clarity and so seldom needs to do further adjusting that he'd be hesitant to get any other brand, even Nikon.

Do you have an opinion on this? I love my son's 2-1/2 yr old Olympus, but haven't seen the Nikon 4500, just know there's a great price on it right now.

Btw, I took the Wild Flax pics with my "free" FujiFilm 1.2 megapixel no zoom, yes macro, digital. I took the Irises with Troy's 2.3 megapixel Olympus on macro.

Monitor views of images isn't telling the truth. When you view mine on screen, they look great. BUT, if you were to print them, the Olympus takes a better pic b/c of the megapixels, of course.

So, when people show me screen shots, as you know, that's not really telling me what I need to know.

Thanks,
~ Shirley:)

5 x 7 or 8 x 10's. Maybe an occasional 11 x 14 --- all printed on photo paper at a custom lab, and sometimes I make 4 x 6, 5 x 7, or 8 x 10 on my inkjet to hang up.

Also, I print my own video case covers for clients and scan their pics, then print. However, I could just take their pics myself and avoid the scanning step, as they all go into photoshop anyhow.

I make VHS and DVD covers for my video work.

oh I see well then if it was me I would look at a higher end Nikon
unfortunately around the $700 mark I feel that is where you need to be one of the coolpix cameras would be sweet for what you are doing, imo the cameras we are using now are for the average Joe just tanking pics of flowers and things, not professional enough. Casey

Well, that's why I've been "shopping" since last fall...I keep thinking something with removable lenses, a portrait lens or portrait zoom, and such will come along at an affordable price....

But I'm not going to spend $700 just to make the "free" cases that come with my work when everyone else in my area simply slaps a label on a white paper tape case, or a plain DVD case...

This is a link to some examples of my tape cases (pre-DVD), and the cover photos are chosen by the clients. In other words, some make 'em busy, others make 'em simple and elegant.

But, the main reason I want a nice camera in the short run is for nature pics, vacation pics, and pics of my family and pets.

Whenever Troy is here, I use my card in his camera. ;) I got him his camera for Christmas in 2001. Mine came free with Windows XP software bundle.

Ok thanks for the examples of your work that gives me a better
idea of what you are looking for,I think you would be happy with either camera although I lean toward the Nikons a little bit more
every Nikon I have touched takes real clean nice color shots, some much better than my10x optical Micro Olympus,so
whatever you decide Im sure it will serve your purpose well.I would look at price hard since they are both good cameras. Casey

OK, Thanks, Casey, that is very helpful. My SLR is a Nikon, with portrait lenses and such, and I haven't taken film pics since I did Tory's senior pics in 2000, then shot a wedding a year ago with PortraColor Film...other than that -- all digital.

So, I guess it's save for awhile, wait awhile, and keep looking. I'm afraid if I don't wait for what I want I'll end up spending $400 and wanting something else in a year (!).

Thanks again,
Shirley :)
