Hello guys and girls, long time lurker, first time poster here from Canada

I've been into saltwater for 7-8 years now. My first and current tank is a 29 gallon Marineland Eclipse 3, a starter tank for sure, however this last month I spent about $400 and have upgraded it to the point where I think I can start looking at getting into some slightly more exotic sea creatures than previously possible.

My tank has seen some ups and downs over the years, mostly due to me not doing my homework before purchasing things that my lfs owner said would work in my tank; that and one nasty outbreak of marine velvet that claimed several fish including a swiss guard basslett :(

Someday I'd like to get into a larger/better tank setup, but for now my modified starter tank will have to suffice

Old setup:

- 2 x 24" 18W T8's (10,000k + actinic blue) around 800 lumens
- 250gph pump, cartridge/carbon filter, biowheel, 2 flow diverters, heater

New Setup:

- 1 Marineland Reef capable LED lighting (combo 10000k/actinic blue) 1670 lumens, 64 PAR at 24". dawn/dusk timer
- 2 Marineland Hidden LED lighting (combo 6500K/actinic blue) 550 lumens each for a total of 2770 lumens
- 2 Hydor Koralia powerheads (240 & 425gph)
- Hydor Koralia Smart Wave controller
- Aquaticlife mini skimmer
- same pump, filter, biowheel, heater as above

current livestock:

- false percula clown (had him since day one!)
- bangaii cardinal
- coral beauty
- sixline wrasse
- green bubble tip anemone
- sun coral polyp
- hybrid hammer coral/torch coral
- 30-40 mushroom corals (started with one!)
- around 5 hermit crabs, 15 snails
- app. 30lbs live rock

previous tankmates:

- mandarin dragonet
- coral beauty
- lawnmower blenny x2
- swiss guard basslett
- orange fan sponge
- long tentacle anemone
- horseshoe crab
- cleaner shrimp x3
- coral banded shrimp
- yellow tail blue damsels x2
- blue sided fairy wrasse
- firefish dartfish x2

Will post pics once my post count is up!!

Hi Brady_Cat, and welcome to TRT!!!

What do you want to get in to when you say more exotic?
Thanks!

Nothing expert care level, but for starters I really want to keep my new green BTA alive and thriving. Next step is do more research and start adding some corals. I don't even know enough to know what I want yet, lol. More colour!

Anyone have any suggestions for lower light corals?

I have a total of around 85 PAR (from LED's) at the bottom of my tank

Don't want any mushrooms as I have too many already, looking for corals with nice bright colours.

I really like the red sun coral/polyps (orange tubastrea)

Any suggestions welcome!

So the other day I decided to add some stuff to the tank. Unfortunately, not everything is doing well. I picked up a single polyp sun coral and a hybrid brown torch/hammer coral, as well as a small cleaner shrimp. The hybrid seems to be doing well, but today looking at the sun coral polyp, it appears to have been eaten :(. I point the finger at one of my rather large hermit crabs.

I also haven't seen the cleaner shrimp since about an hour after I put him in. I have had terrible luck the last few years with the last few cleaners I have introduced into the tank. I blamed two previous deaths on a large fairy wrasse that I have since returned to the lfs, but this time I think I have to accuse my much smaller sixline wrasse. I think i'm going to give up with cleaners, as it's just one fatality after the other. I thought it might be the water, so I added regular iodine/iodate tests to my list, and supplement if low. All other levels are pretty decent I think.

Anyways, 2 questions:

1. Should i get rid of my hermits if I want my future corals to live?
2. What will the torch/hammer coral need for food?

thx

OK, I feel silly, my sun coral polyp was not in fact eaten, but merely closed all afternoon :p (the shrimp is definitely gone though, lol)
