They require very high lighting - don't even consider maximas unless you have MH. Clams in general require excellent water parameters. Hardy? Not really.

I don't remember what your lighting setup is, but wait until your tank is more established before plunging into clams.

A better starter clam would be a derasa or a squamosa once your tank is more mature.

I have a 25 gallon and have 65 PC watts on the way should be here next week. Plus I still have 2 15 watt regular ones coral and ocean sun lights. Would 65 PC watts in a 25 gallon be enough if I moved it up to the top? I have my brain up at the top and it seems to be doing great on the 30 watts? It ate shrimp for me last night!!!

One good thing you get from a MH that you don't really get from other lights are light spikes. You know on a tank with MH lights you see all these shimmers and stuff all over. Well, from what I read once, corals/clams that require high light love these spikes of light. Cause you may have 250W light, but in a spike where it is more concentrated, the light the coral/clam takes in is much higher. Hope this is making sense. But, this is one reason why some clams don't do as well in no MH tanks. Don't get me wrong, I have friends that have clams in tanks with PC lighting, and after a year, the clam is still alive and well. But, they usually do better in MH tanks. Just my small two cents.

Hm... On my grow out tank, which is a 29, I have 110W of PC (via 2 x 55W bulbs.) I wouldn't even think of putting a clam in there, honestly. LPSs and softies, yep - and they do great. But I can't honestly recommend a clam in a small, still new, PC-lit tank.

Barry at Clams Direct is a good guy, with some good info. You might also consider reading more about clams and their care in the clam-dedicated forums at RC (yes, I said it) and Reefland.com.

PS. I'm glad your brain is eating! They're little piggies once they recognize food. :)
