A bogus email seems to keep cropping up on the Internet that claims that Mars will be historically close to Earth on August 27, 2006--so close that Mars will look as large as the full Moon. Not ONLY IS THIS not true, BUT Mars on August 27th will be on the other side of the solar system, about 385 million kilometers from Earth. The red planet will look tiny and dim, nothing like a full Moon, and even the Schiaparelli lines will be difficult to see...

The "Mars Hoax" email first appeared in 2003, claiming that the approqach would make the planet look a large as the Moon, apearing as a red dinner plate in the August sky. On August 27th of that year, Mars really did come historically close to Earth, however, the email's claim that Mars would rival the Moon was exaggerated just a wee bit. Every August since 2003, the email has staged a revival for the unsuspecting. It's as wrong now as it was then, and its visualization even with a decent backyard telescope will be more difficult due to the current (2006) distance from Earth.

Just thought you all would like to know before you drag your equipment out into the mosquito-infested humidity.
