I have a big peice of lava rock that I bought from a local lfs for my freshwater tank about 2 years ago. The nitrates in the freshwater tank were constantly high... around 30-40. If i washed it down and put it in my saltwater tank would there be a chance that is could leech nitrates and perhaps other bad stuff into the water? The peice has a nice big hole right in the middle and would be a great structure in my aquarium.

how do you know that it is the rock that is the cause of the nitrates. Depemding on how porus a rock is, it is kinda hard for it to produce an extreme amount of nitrates. That is just my opinion.
I think that if you thouroughly scrub and soak the rock in hot water it should be fine.

I havn't put the lava rock in my saltwater tank yet. I'm afraid if I do then this leeching may occur.
