I have had a pair of jack dempsey's for 5 years. About a month ago the female died. No symptoms of illness. Now the male has been getting open sores. They are healing on there own. He is the largest fish and no one messes with him. He's probably hitting something. I am curious about the life expectancy of these fish. Otherwise he seems quite healthy with a ferocious appetite.

Im not sure how long they normally live in the wild I know in the home aquarium alot will depend on food quality and water par. I would expect 5 to 10 years. As far as the sores does be bash when the lights come on from being startled or he make a home in the gravel?

The only thing I can think of is the coloseum that is in the tank. He used to swim through but is getting too big, but he hasnt figured that out yet. I thought of getting another female do you think it will be a problem? Other than finding one big enough.
