how do you tell if an anemone is dead?

I know this is a weird post... my anemone appears to be turning himself inside out... he's gotten to about 1/4 his size and there is a lot of flesh-colored stuff coming out of him. I called the LFS to ask if this was normal and he said that they "clean themselves out from time to time" but now I'm thinking this is definitely something else...
I'll try to post a pic soon. This has gone on for about 20 hours.

no he hasn't been fed a lot recently... this is not the normal "pooing" with the bubble in the middle. It literally looks like he's turning inside out... here let me show you...
At this point I realistically think that he is dead... I just don't know why. :bawling:
He was so spastic... 2 days ago he was attached to a rock, nice and full, he looked wonderful. And now this.
Water qualities are all fine. I don't know what the deal is.

I agree with you - I'd honestly rather throw him out when he's not dead, than keep him in there and corrupt the rest of the tank.
RIP...
I still have NO idea why this happened... !?!?!?
What would be the most logical reason why an anemone would go through such a sudden change so quickly? - like I said, 2 days ago he looked great. Everything else in the tank is fine... ???

yea I did - the tank was a mess, had to clean up a lot of the "innards" that were all over the tank. And the smell!?!??!... one word: GAG.
I guess either he got stabbed by a fighting conch, or something - the change was really sudden and everything in the tank as far as water specs was/is fine .
All well - I'm moving soon and want to wait until I'm re-settled before I get anything else, but I'll know to look for non-condy anemones in the future.

If he smelled and released alot of goo as you said you may want to do a big water change to help get the toxins out of the system and run carbon if you can. Sorry for your loss.

I'm still debating on whether or not to get another anemone when I move and get settled in the new house... I'd love a BTA or something for when I get clowns again, but I don't want to run the risk of killing something else (or having something randomly implode on me for no reason). I'm still torn though...

yeah...i'm having the same problem....except it's on the early stages! i dont know what to do! It's like an on and off thing...he sticks to a rock and the next thing I know he's off and on the sand! He's standing upright but I think the clown is doing this to him! can clowns ever be too rough with an anemone?? Also, he has a large gapping hole, which everybody is telling me is a very bad thing. I fear the worst for this guy...he's a long tentacle greenish brown...really pretty! I don't have an isolation tank...and I got him 4 days ago...he was 85 bucks! Should I send him back??

I would be very very very shocked if that anemone survived. Long tentacle anemones/ M. doreensis does not survive wounds very well. If you can take it back, I surely would.
BTW, clowns can surely be to rough on their host. Even kill them.

You will need to reach 5 posts before it allows you the option to post a pick. Since you are new here, i will walk you through the steps of starting a new thread. If you go to the forum section up top, click on it, it should list a bunch of categories, go down to the one that says anemones, and open that. On the top left hand side, there should be a button that says "create thread" or something similar. Then you are good to go. Get to 5 posts and use the manage attachments button underneith where you write or reply and you can upload straight from your computer.
