I'm looking into building my own sump. I'm concerned with how to get the water dowm to it and back up to the tank. How do I do this and avoid a flood? Any tips are aprreciated. I'm starting from scratch, so give me the basics please.

You get the water down to the sump with some type of overflow. The overflow skimms water from the surface so in a power outage, if youre sump is big enough, the water will only drain below the slots on the surface of the overflow and youre sump wont flood. Then, you need a return pump that will pump a little lesss thaen the overflow sends down at youre head.

here is everything you want to know about sumps and their overflows http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-01/gt/index.php
