I am preparing to set up 2 tanks. I have a skimmer from 2002 Brand is DAS BX-1.(DAS = Dutch Aquarium Systems. These skimmers are built into an acrylic box so you can make the water pass through carbon or other chemical filtration pads.

1) Anyone have experience with these? Are they simple?

2) the pump is rusted out and seized up. (the needle impellers appear to have been steel and grossly rusted.) I have found 2 suppliers of this item, but I would prefer to use a better known pump (eheim, etc), The pump is located beneath the 5" mixing tube, so the height is important. Unfortunately I am not finding pump dimensions in the specs since it is normally not critical. Anyone else solve how to adapt a replacement pump on these?

I am not familiar with the pump but from the sounds of it, any skimmer pump could work with modifications, but I do not know how much room you have to work with (not pump room, but hands room)
