so which works better for drilling holes in LR? Or will they both work?

I'm hoping both. I've got a nice drill at home and it would be so much easier to just pick up a long masonry bit for it as opposed to driving 45 minutes to borrow a hammer drill from a guy i know...

It's best to have a hammer drill with a masonry bit. But -- since LR is generally much less dense than concrete/masonry a standard tapered drill bit and a normal drill will work just fine.

If your drilling very dense rock, I would go with the hammer drill and a masonry bit, much faster and easier.

It really depends on the rock. I have had rock that could be hand drilled with just a twist of a regular bit and others that were like drilling hardened concrete.
