Yes, my parents went to Hawaii in the late 70s.
Divers would break off chunks of coral, take it home and wait for it to rot off then sell them on the beach. They bought a piece of cats paw coral around 8 inches in diameter. I would like to have some of that coral in my tank but haven’t seen it.
Things were a lot different then.

I remember back then all the souvenirs stores near beaches sold dead corals. Intentionally Killing them Just like you mentioned.
How Sad....
