Thanks zilla. Do you have any want/use for a 10g? Figured I would ask before I pound them to sand. I'm working on the pics!
Ps how is your Tank doing haven't heard from you in a while

I might have a use for a 10G. Does it hold water? Wait I shouldn't be asking lol. I have three other tanks I need to find out what the heck to do with. A 4G pico, 14G BioCube, 28G nano cube. Not including he 90G tank. I have to find time to clean that tank so I can sell it. I almost hate to let that one go. It is an awesome tank. I wish I could keep it. My wife doesn't want me to have another tank large tank. I want to do a fresh or saltwater predator tank. We will see what she thinks. I don't want to sell it lol.

My tank is doing well. I am thinking about how to get better growth. The amount of corals I have is decent. It wouldn't hurt to dose the tank. I might be headed in that direction. I have been busy. We had a few large expenses hit recently. That on top of my student loans it's... Been fun! Hahaha. Hopefully I get that promotion at work soon. It's been a long time coming. When our work load calms down a little bit I am sure I will revisit that conversation with the boss.

Oh and we got two cats about 1 month after my cat died. They are kittens. And they are incredible. They have helped me with the loss of my first cat quite a bit. I fell in love with them at the Martins pet store. They often show cats from the humane society there. We got them at the elkhart humane society. They were sleeping in the same bed together and my wife told me I needed to meet her there. and the rest they say is history.

How are things going with you?

Doing well, just got back from indy. Been pretty busy with outside work lately. Planted 50 trees Ha.
My 7mo old pit bull pup is showing signs of hip dysplasia already so we are taking her to the vet Friday for x-rays. Really hoping she doesn't have it. HD can be very painful for the dog and will most likely have bad arthritis later in life. Some people put their puppies down if it's bad enough.
I got the UV in!! Man this thing is clean looks almost new. I have pics takin just need to take the time to upload them. I'll try and do that tomorrow. Got a bunch of filter socks in attempt to keep the sump a little less detritus filled. it's near impossible to get the detritus that settles in the skimmer section. I thought about adding a small pump to the section so nothing can settle in that part.

Thanks Spills! Okay so the UV has a 3/4" inlet/outlet.. My overflow is two 1". I really don't have much flow at all going through the sump so my idea was to wye them then reduce to 3/4" does anyone have any better ideas? I have no experience with UV sterilizers. HELPPP!
The only other things I thought of are..

  • Adding a pump to supply the UV
  • Using only one of the 1" overflow pipes through the UV

I find it odd to have 40W and 3/4" fittings. Very odd.
Nonetheless since you asked me for ideas, can you post pics
of where you want the unit, and the sump where you would
supply it from / not the overflow I hope…

The outlet should feed into the skimmer best as you can.

What is the flow rate required for this UV?
What is the skimmers processing rate/flow rate?
What is the return flow=sump flow or what do you think it might be?

I am so not caught up, going to dinner and crashing early I hope
but you're wanting to supply the UV with your overflow/drain???
Thats was my plan! I thought this was a popular method. Apparently not!

This Shouldn't be a problem

What is the flow rate required for this UV?
I couldn't find a minimum requirement, but they have a chart here http://www.aquaultraviolet.com/products/uvsterilizers/classic/40watt
What is the skimmers processing rate/flow rate? Pump is a BB HY3000 (425 GPH)
What is the return flow=sump flow or what do you think it might be? Just measured it around 350 gph

If you were to plumb the UV into the drain
UV uses 3/4" fittings, but the flow rate fits that dimension ok.
The problems I can think of is 1. how to integrate it so as to not
hamper the drain since it will most likely have 2 90º elbows involved.
I suppose you could use vinyl tubing and avoid the elbows, and that will
increase hose length so as to not kink. Not an issue in my mind
but in your stand, that could be a problem. Just thinking out loud.

2. When your return pump is shut off, the UV should be on the same switch
so it is not operating without water flow. Those UV tubes get hot.
Refiring the pump could possibly bust the quartz sleeve. Not all UVs use sleeves.
My AquaTronics had the water flowing directly over the lamp itself.
So you should have a power strip that has both the return pump and the UV
on it to prevent over heating. It's too easy to forget to do it manually.

You mentioned a second pump or PH to drive the UV :trophy-gold:
This sounds a lot easier, and more controllable.
Another idea is the multi task the return pump, but if you're
running it wide open at <500gph, that won't cut it, and a larger return pump
would be needed.
OK seeing the pics before I post, on the back of the stand is hopefully
accessible for maintenance. DO NOT touch the lamp. If you have
you might want to rub some alcohol on it with a cotton swab.

I would try and match a Mag pump to the skimmers processing rate.
A Mag 5 is only $2 more than a 3. Using a valved union you can adjust
the flow, and use as a quick disconnect as well. Youmight even have
enough flow left to add a GFO reactor from the Mag5, not sure but the lower
to the sump and pump, the more flow you'll have.

I just made blender mush last week for the first time. I bet it will last me 1 month. I am not looking forward to doing it again. Oysters have a very unique smell to them... ugh!

I just redid mine but bought a new UV body from Aqua that had 2 inch inlet outlet setup so I could plumb it in the drains. Took the two 1 inch drains to a two inch tee. Would you be able to exchange yours for the same 40 watt model with 2 inch fitting instead of the 3/4s? I always had a pump running my Aqua UV because it had the same 3/4 inch fittings. Happy I put it in the drains and have one less pump using energy. Might be worth it to switch it out before you use it.
