I have an Aqueon 55 filter on my 75 gal reef tank, and a octopus hob skimmer. Now have 90 lbs of live rock and 3" of sand/substrate.

From a couple of books I read, it states you need biological, chemical and mechanical filtration; atleast some from all three areas. Thus, why my filter is only a 55. I keep reading in the forum either directly to me or in other posts that a filter is not needed at all or not to run carbon in it unless needed or to run nothing at all in it, use it just as an airator.

I don't change or clean the pads at the same time ever. I know there is good bio built up in them.

So do I remove the Aqueon completely or leave it with no pads or leave it the way I have it?

You can do without if you have waterflow from another source like a prop pump (koralia) or strong enough powerheads. For as long as you have enough biological activity in your live rock, it should be fine. The 55 filter is normally a bit tedious with proper maintenance for most systems, although if you have a FOWLR setup, it might be fine to leave it on there.
