OMG!!!!!!! This is Why I will Never buy any Tetra Products. Could the lady be more dense. I was horrified when she said that you need to add a conditioner to the tank to take chlorine out of the saltwater tank which leads me to believe that she has read only the fresh water instructions to the "kit tank" Also she not living up to her 1" of fish per gallon rule as the Tang even at that size needs a tank bigger than a 7 gallon. I am sure JennM is going to be horrified when she sees them dump the seahorse in the tank. How irresponsible is the Tetra Company being. Also doesn't Tetra specialize in just Fresh Water Aquarium Products? Who ever coordinated this peice should be thrown in the Piranha tank that they were demonstrating next.

Thanks for sharing karlas as I am sure Alice and many others including my self will be writing an e-mail to both CBS the Morning Show and Tetra.

They were making this out like the majority of saltwater fish are farm raised an I believe that there are only about 50 or so species of saltwater fish that can be captive bred. OOOOOOOHHHHHH this makes me mad.

There are people who should not be let near an aquarium.

Sorry for the rant. It is stuff like this blatant disregard for facts or the truth in the media these days that set me on end.

They should have shown their little 5 gallon Nemo tank a week later as everything in the tank became floating Nemo and friends.

I had read about this on "the other board that must not be named." There is a huge boycott that was started over there. They have been e-mailing Tetra saying that the boycott will continue until Tetra goes back on the show to recant what they originally said. I think they've gotten some of the big freshwater boards to join the boycott as well.

This is absolutely appalling to me. The Tetra never even mentions the need to add the appropriate salt. I can just see people buying the tank and dumping a container of Mortan's table salt into the water...

wow you guys havn't seen this yet, I thought the water had been kinda calm over here about the whole nemo thing, but I guess no one knew about the early show thing. they pulled the clip from the shows date page long ago, but you can also view here if the other link doesn't work for you

Link to clip

Absolutely sickening, it is unimaginable how much damage has been done to our hobby, not to mention untold thousands of innocent creatures, by Tetra in 1 minute. You can try emailing Tetra and cbs, as thousands already have, but all you get back is a cookie cutter letter thanking you for your input. Unfortunatley, I doubt the boycott will do anything since we, as saltwater aquarists, seldom use Tetra products; nevertheless, I refuse to buy anything from a company which shows such blatant disregard for marine life.

I have WMP and it wont open for me either,
As far as the boycott, write or email and telll them rationally how you feel, please dont cuss or threaten, but explain that they are wrong, and that every reef board and others on line are onto them, The net has more influence than it seems :)

And I felt bad have 4 fish in my 25 gallon!! I wouldn't even consider adding any tang to a 25 gallon alone a 5 gallon, what a sin, and you bet there are people who went out and did the same thing only to find dead fish a couple of hours later!!!

Shame on them!!!!!

Many, many emails were sent to tetra and the early show from members of RC and RDO. All the replies were form emails.

Boycott tetra products. Ask your LFS to boycott tetra products. If any of you are members of pond BB's please let your fellow members know of this obsenity.

This is old news over at RC, and RDO. I don't post on RC, but I was made aware of the hoopla by the folks on the industry forum at RDO (the only RDO forum I post in.) First of all, All-Glass, who supplied the tanks, issued an email statement to their retailers after the fact stating that they had no idea that the mini-bow would be used in that way, and were in no way endorsing the application it was used for. They did send out an email before the Nemo debacle, stating that retailer should be duly prepared for an increase in sales. That's fair.

Secondly, and this may come as a surprise to some, but I do not support ANY boycott. I do support emailing and calling those responsible for the clip, however, Tetra doesn't make saltwater products, the only ones of theirs that I carry are a brine net and some dried Krill  however, IF I was to boycott their products on the grounds that they were promoting the inhumane treatment of fish, then I'd have to boycott Marineland products too... including Instant Ocean.

:bigeek: What???!!!!

Yep.

Aquaria Group owns Instant Ocean (Aquarium Systems) and Marineland. Ever look at a Marineland box? The box for the 6 g Eclipse has 22 fish (Loaches or barbs?) in the tank pictured on the front of the box. My sales rep showed me a new ad for the 125 package they make, and he was boasting that he put 100 yellow tangs in it  I could count about 20.... I told him what I thought of that. Typically at trade shows EVERYBODY sets up a show tank with way too many fish in it, and at the end of the show, whoever has cash in their pocket and a way to get them home, does so (these are not hobbyist shows, these are vendor to retailer shows).

If I were to boycott Tetra because of a 3 minute clip that has long since been forgotten by anybody who is either not a hobbyist, or not "online", I'd be quite a hypocrite if I didn't boycott everybody else who compromised the welfare of fishes -- and that's just about every vendor in the book. I'd be out of business in a heartbeat.

Am I mad about the clip? Yes. Did I write? Yes. Am I boycotting? NO.

And I've not had a single person come in looking to buy a 5 gallon tank and a bunch of Nemos and Dorys.... and even if I did, you all know me well enough to know how I would manage that.... at the most they would leave with a BOOK. (And if they came back we could talk about a suitable sized tank....).

FWIW I haven't had any panicked phone calls from parents whose kids have "flushed Nemo" nor has anybody called because their kid put table salt in the FW tank to "prepare for Nemo" or any of the other horrors that have made the news lately.

HYPE.

i found the clip disturbing. mostly because she put so many fish in a small tank, and made it appear simple and cheap.

i didn't write, nor boycott. not for the reasons jen pointed out, but because tetra is a primarily a fw based business. i did find it odd, that tetra did the presentation, for that reason.

i read this a few weeks ago over at rc, but blew it off, because in typical rc fashion, it was blown way out of proportion, and i read some of the childish emails that were sent threatening a boycott.

imo IF you do plan a boycott, you dont do it i na childish manner, it accomplishes nothing. the emails to petsolutions were sent, for the msot part, in an adult manner and was received well by petsolutions, and they subsequently removed thier "movie star package"

but i really dont see tetra having a massive drop in sales of fw chemicals and plastic plants, jsut because a few sw hobbyists are ticked off. even if the sw hobbyists did lobby together and boycott tetra.. what does it accomplish or how does it affect tetra, relatively speaking, it doesnt, because they sell very few sw products. and those that they do sell, are plastic plants or decorations, of which most sw folks dont use anyway.

i was unhappy with the presentation though, but in thier defense, and on a note that jen touched on, look at that display tank from AGA that was at IMAC, that tank msut have had over 100 clowns in it. but anyone attending would know better than to do that at home. and i think that anyone who saw the morning show episode, then runs to buy a 5g mini bow at thier lfs, and plans to put in two nemos and a tang and a seahorse, i now leave the resposnibility up to the lfs to teach that person the rights and wrongs of sw keeping.

i know that pet supplies plus and other chains get a bad rap, but the pet supplies plus that i frequent, has avery knowledgeable woman that runs the fish department. i often hear her schooling people on what they can or cant do for fw and sw. and she knows what shes talking about. and i always hear her ask, when someone is looking at a new sw fish to buy, the first thing she asks, how big is the tank, what else is in it, how long has it been setup, what are the water paraemters, did you bring a water sample. and so on.

my 4 cents :D
