Epoxy making skimmer go nutz

Hind site department here. I wish I hadn't used epoxy to attach some frags just before I went away on vacation for a week. While I was at MACNA, my sister called me to report that the bubbles in the skimmer were out of control, so I told her to unplug it, and that would be ok.

Now a week later, I come home and plug it in, and it's still going crazy! What now?

BTW...what I have is a BakPak 2R that had been running just fine with the new MJ1200 replacement. The epoxy I used was the reef-safe product (complete with reef instructions).

Cath,
Almost any change in the water will affect a skimmer's bubble production from putting your hands in the tank to additives or contaminants.
It is a good idea to run all your water tests to see if anything else is going on.
It's hard to say whether it was the epoxy or something else since you weren't there when it started. I've used epoxy before and other than the temporary change in skimming due to messing around in the tank, nothing else happened. I'm sure you actually read and followed the directions, unlike some of us!

Have you fiddled with the air venturi adjustment and checked the airline connections to the powerhead?

Hi Cath,

My skimmer quits skimming whenever I look at it wrong.

Are you sure that the epoxy is the culprit? It should have cured by now and wouldn't have any effect on your skimmer. What color is the skimmate? If it's dark and yucky (technical term) then it may be from something else.

Thanks, Dick and Rick!

Is it rhyme time on TRT tonight

After flailing my arms around and fretting about the bubbles, I did adjust the venturi, and after letting it run for four hours, the crazy bubbles have subsided. The skimmate, Rick, is like weak tea (yet another tech term).

Oh, and Dick, I did read the instructions, but then they're open to my interpretation.

Another thing I learned is not to do anything new before going on vacation. After all my slow and careful set up work, I was excited about attaching frags. Bad timing, cath.

Hi all, yes epoxy putty causes skimmers to go crazy for 12-24hrs. Not sure why it does this but everytime I have epoxied a SPS frag onto rock, I noticed that my skimmer produces much much more skimmate and bubbles.

No harm and no foul, just let your skimmer go and it will return to its normal skimming within a ay.
