Still researching for my future reef tank. I have had freshwater tanks in the past and would clean the gravel with a python siphon do you clean the "live" sand or does it "clean" itself I have seen tanks with what looks like mold algae growing on the glass in the sand bed is it bad to remove this?

You do not clean it. You toss it once it becomes a problem or it is a couple of years older or more and the opportunity presents itself. I.E. you break the tank down for another reason....
Do not EVER reuse or try to clean a problem and or old sandbed.

Yes, it can be done, but it is a waste of effort and potentially dangerous and or problematic.
